Description
EDDIE CANTOR was the earliest of modern media superstars - by 1929, his comedic antics and great expressive eyes had catapulted him to the acme of Show Business fame, on Broadway, on records, on radio, and in the movies. He was riding this pinnacle of success, and was, like a lot of people, heavily invested in the stock market. Then came October 29th, 1929! The market crashed with a bang, wiping out all of Eddie's gains, leaving him technically a pauper. Luckily, he was quite gainfully employed (starring in the hit show "WHOOPEE!"), and within a couple of years, had remade his fortune. But on "Black Thursday," things looked very bleak indeed, and on that very day, Cantor showed up at Victor records' 24th street studio, to record this impromptu, and blackly funny, account of the crash that still was in progress!:
"Nowadays, when a man walks into a hotel, and requests a room on the nineteenth floor, the clerk asks him: 'For sleeping, or jumping?'"
In the ensuing weeks, Cantor expanded this spontaneous three minute routine into a terrific little book called "Caught Short."
The other side, "MY WIFE IS ON A DIET," is about the latest food fad, the "Eighteen Day Grapefruit Diet." Eddie is his usual amusing self, showing no signs of panic!
This original 1929 "Scroll" Victor 22189 is nominally in V++ condition. The record has a patina of light surface abrasions; the labels are a little faded. It plays loudly and clearly despite all that.

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
