Label/Format: Harvest – much rarer genuine original format with no EMI logo, ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ on rims and most important of all, ‘Solid in UK’ etc near the top. Even slightly later pressings omitted this text and these earliest pressings are amongst the very first issued. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: SHVL 757.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: The album itself is scarce and never easy to find in top conditions. This copy with its 1 G / 1 G mothers and stampers is within the very first 300 ever pressed – the ULTIMATE first pressing and in super condition. This is the rarest example made and with these labels, seldom seen or offered. Do not underestimate how difficult and elusive this album is.

Brief Info: This vintage debut album is an acid-blues classic and introduced us to the raunchy Broughton sound. A band that always gave an audience a great time at the festivals between 1970-73 - they almost became a staple diet at these events. One of the earliest in the prized Harvest catalogue and never too easy to find. Always among the best for packaging, this classic Harvest cover has stunning band pictures and here in beautiful condition too, as is the record - its almost hard to believe this record dates this far back. Any collector of this cult band and the early Harvest classics, this is a must-have item. Being the earliest ever issued too, makes for a much rarer copy, most seen or offered are later examples.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate .

Cover Grade and Format: EX+ a gatefold format with front and back laminate. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain a lovely rich shine, freshness and clarity with any friction rubs or dulling minimal, any minor amount present only shows under angled light. Both sides have outstanding artwork that retains rich colour and can be enjoyed through solid unpeeled laminate. One small lift on the front top edge, the rest is fully adhered. The front has only a few fine edge hairline creases, the back the same bar a couple of moderate thumb creases on the left edge, one only small. A few light surface marks hardly show either and don’t with normal viewing and both sides remain highly attractive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces practically as made, a tiny glue smear near the top right corner was probably present from new.

Top Edges: Both unworn and very straight, all solidly laminated.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering. The odd small and minor burr trace when viewed end-on. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine too: Solid, straight and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. Not the thickest made but very neat indeed. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, the surface of which is silky smooth with no scuffs.

Corners: All very sharp and neat with lovely pointed shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this classic late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner: This was in a plain white unlined EMI type inner. Too early for the promotional inners, t his was one of the earliest titles issued on the famous progressive label. This inner is in superb condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Strong EX, with only light surface marks that have NO sound. Minor surface scuffs and ultra faint hairlines, merely superficial blemishes that few albums this age and type ever avoid. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Harvest classic plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Practically devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean first pressing. As stated above, within the first 300 ever made, these earliest cuts always have superior sound quality. The finer details just seem to diminish slightly as they get pressed more and more and that’s why the connoisseur and audiophile collector cherish them the most. But never easy to find of course. 1G / 1G Harvest-EMI albums are elusive and do no surface often, those that are not always in the best playing conditions either. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
