Edwin Starr went from run-of-the-mill second-level act to hitmaker with this 1970 album, without question his finest. Norman Whitfield gave Starr the chance to cut a song that had been intended for The Temptations. They later did a version of "War," but Starr completely vaporized their rendition to the extent that most people today think he wrote it. Starr was now a celebrity and briefly in Motown's top echelon.

This classic mid-period Motown album represents some of the best music (not to mention the most soulful vocalizing) that the label ever captured on wax. Edwin Starr's vocal is a force of nature! And the power of his emotion on the famous title track ("War") which became an unofficial anthem of the pacifist movement) is undeniable. This is the ONLY way you can currently obtain this great soul LP. For the reasons unknown to us mortals, Barry Gordy & the rest of the Motown gang decided that it is not in our best interest as consumers to have the access to this wonderful music on Compact Disc (CD has been out of print for more than 20 years!) . The title track triggered multiple versions by the likes of U2, Bruce Springsteen and many others. If you miss this now, you may have to spend countless years searching for another copy - or pleading with Barry Gordy to reissue it, which sounds like a lost cause to us.

·      THE RECORD

(a)         THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them.

(b)         The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(c)         The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

COVER IS STILL SEALED; HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT MINT OR NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 2 (back side)

-       Cover has a small cutout saw-mark (an indent about 3-5 mm long ) on one of its seams.

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged / bent  (nothing significant)

-       Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
