Seriously, Egg is hugely underrated. As one of the few Canterbury pioneers that defined the genre in its peak, Egg may be the least rated on RYM. I didn't have high expectation listening to this for the first time, but the result proved to be so fascinating I found myself playing it again and again without stop. Egg's debut, as the band itself, created a unique style of Canterbury sound that was quirkily manic, cryptic, whatever you call it, in its own way. Egg's special. Egg physched like Soft Machine, experimented like Henry Cow, and brought in the classical stuff like no one else. I tried very hard to give it a 4, under the reason I believe would be the same for many other raters. Egg has its flaws, it's true, but still the truth is I got so hooked by the extraordinary musicianship presented here, I kept listening and the feeling of being enlightened just lingered without end. Egg does have the right to be called a great Canterbury band, THIS very album is exactly the best proof.
