From my own vast private collection gathered over last 45+ years ...these mostly from 1973 - 1978 I had my own Record Store here in Northern California in the 1970's and 80's -and bringing in wonderfully vibrant and amazing Progressive Rock Imports was a top specialty and priority - I was (still am) so nuts about this music that I had 3 different evolving weekly Radio Programs dedicated to it over 20 years - and loved nothing more than turning folks on to these bands and immersing myself and my audience in these exotic sounds. Now it is finally time for me to pass them on - my hardest LPs to part with, some 8 boxes of which I shall be listing throughout this Spring. Many of the leading progenitors of the 1st progressive era, but quite a few more obscure but no less amazing artists of the period. . *Sadly I am NOT FAST at listing and can am lucky to get around 50 up at a time, but they will keep on coming (as I pause between series, to focus on top level packing and immediate shipping) so keep checking back.

While more daring and less immediately accessible to the uninitiated than their previous 2 albums, Egg breaks the binds of structure, and spins off into odd yet fascinating new realms on The Civil Surface.
After releasing two highly original albums -- their self-titled debut and The Polite Force -- the Egg cracked in 1971, and the trio went their separate ways. In 1974, however, Dave Stewart, Mont Campbell and Clive Brooks reunited and returned to the studio. There they were joined by members of Henry Cow and old friend Steve Hillage, resulting in the luscious album, The Civil Surface. Although Egg had presented some of the material within on their final tour, still that long ago taster barely primed fans for what was to come.
Experimental, improvisational and in places Avant Garde, CIVIL SURFACE is loaded with intricate rhythms and tempo changes and coursing passages counterpointed by slower effervescent segments, exemplified in Enneagram and Nearch. Throughout it all, Stewart's keyboard composition, playing, dark tones, and overall sound, hold the center and lead the way over the top. . "Wring Out the Ground (Loosely Now)", nimbly slips from jazzy improvisation into prog rock, enveloping numerous tempo changes along the way, while a variety of spacy effects and vocals also building on the past. "Germ Patrol" cuts the cords almost entirely. It begins with a clicking metronome, skittering noises, and a trumpet reveille, as the germs fall into line then march off into jazz, circle Yes territory, and assault the bastions of avant-garde. "Nearch" is even more experimental, a piece built around abrupt pauses that grow ever longer as the number progresses and builds, with woodwinds and organ ominously pouring in between the empty spaces. The woodwinds are further highlighted on both the bright and airy "Wind Quartet 1" and the introspective "Wind Quartet 2", while a heavenly choir floats through "Prelude". (Amanda Parsons, Barbara Gaskin and Ann Rosenthal - better known as "The Northettes" for their work with Hatfield and The North). . A very strong coda for EGG. As hard as it was for them to come back together to create and record this final album, we would have been much poorer indeed if it had never come about.
