The mid-1990s saw no shortage of era-defining British rock bands that sneered and jangled their way through America. Inspired by their favorite punk and New Wave bands like the Stranglers and Wire, Elastica burned quickly yet brightly, becoming an MTV staple in 1995 with their self-titled debut and its lead single “Connection.”

While that song, with its indelible guitar riff and earworm vocal melody, remains an album highlight, it’s one of many hook-laden tracks that makes the album a defining monument of the Britpop era. “Car Song” is the best track about sex in the backseat since Grand Funk Railroad’s “Mr. Limousine Driver,” while Debut single “Stutter” takes on male impotence with unforgiving honesty and a curled lip.

“Ultimately, everything we do is always going to be defined by our [punk-pop] aesthetic,” perpetually cool frontwoman Justine Frischmann told Rolling Stone in 1996. The album remains a critical favorite, with Allmusic noting that “what makes Elastica such an intoxicating record is not only the way the 16 songs speed by in 40 minutes, but that they're nearly all classics.”
