Description

THE ELECTRIC PRUNES : UNDERGROUND

Classic second album ~ Tri-color Showboat Reprise label ~ Beautiful NM- Cover

MONO copy ~ LP grades Near Mint minus ~ Reprise R 6262 ~ 1968 ~ First Issue

LP comes with its original vintage Reprise Records inner sleeve

Original cover grades Near Mint minus with very slight wear described in detail below :
There is a small round hole puched in the extreme upper left hand corner. The spine is intact, sharp & very legible. Both seams are intact and sharp. Opening edge shows very slight wear. The back cover has a small amount of ring wear along the edges. The classic, psychedelic front cover is in extraordinary shape, showing very little wear.

The first issue, "tri-color showboat" Reprise Mono labels are very sharp with a few barely visible spindle marks.

The record has a few faint surface marks/ paper scuffs on Side Two that are strictly cosmetic.

Here is a well meaning [but a bit misguided] review of THE ELECTRIC PRUNES' classic second album :

"The Electric Prunes' second album was just as uneven as their debut and lacked the obvious hit material its predecessor had boasted in "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)" and "Get Me to the World on Time." However, at least a more consistent tone and recognizable group identity had asserted itself, as the band wrote half the material. In addition, the airy-fairy vaudevillian misfires that had dotted the first LP were thankfully abolished. Many of the tunes — whether from the band or from their frequent outside contributors Annette Tucker and Nancie Mantz — had floridly inscrutable lyrics ("The Great Banana Hoax," "Children of Rain," "Dr. Do-Good," "Antique Doll") of the kind that some hip critics like to scorn as dated and naïve flower-power relics. At the best points of this album, though, the Prunes conjured a menacing psychedelic pop atmosphere that, in conjunction with their flair for unusual guitar reverb and sundry special effects, sounded fetchingly spooky and seductive. "Hideaway," with its killer bass riff, and the demented "Dr. Do-Good," a crazed children's hour theme gone amok, were standouts in this regard, while "Long Day's Flight" is one of their best psych-garage tracks. On a more straightforward level, "I Happen to Love You" is one of the best obscure Goffin/King covers you're likely to hear, and one of the bluesiest too." ~ AMG

The running times shown below are from AMG. They are not given on the cover or record labels.

The Bear Says : "Here is a very nice first issue Mono copy of UNDERGROUND, the second [and probably best] LP by THE ELECTRIC PRUNES, released on the Reprise label in 1968. This LP is an absolute classic of the Psychedelic genre, kicking off with "The Great Banana Hoax", a pulsating, swirling tune concerning the non-joys of banana peel smoking. The chanted fade-out chorus is not "we'd love to turn you on" but instead : "we'd love to put you on. " The Prunes' twin guitarists really deliver the goods on this LP on psychedelic gems such as "Dr. Do Good" and "Hideaway". The band continued to make records in the later 60's but they don't ever match this solid effort, which sadly received little airplay in its day. The 38-year old record has a few faint surface marks but was not spun often and sight grades Near Mint minus. The original cover shows only very slight wear & remains in Near Mint minus shape. Any vinyl copy of this title is a scarce item these days but a first issue Mono copy is very collectible. UNDERGROUND is a title thast every Psych collector should own, even if a few of the songs sound a little "dated". Travel up to the Underground. Turn on with THE ELECTRIC PRUNES !!"
