Description

When RCA reissued the Florence Foster Jenkins compilation on a twelve-inch lp, they were stuck for something to put on the reverse side. Better they should have left it blank, but instead they came up with something they called A Faust Travesty by Thomas Burns and Jenny Williams (or was it the other way around..anyway, who cares). Now it seems that Williams and Burns (or Burns and Williams), far from being intended parodists, fancied themselves the real thing, and they made several recordings on their own label and under their real names, Ellis Chadbourne and Norma Jean Chadbourne. Here is one of them, issued on the Swell-Tone label, which they describe as "English term for 'Messa di Voce'..Supreme Italian Style of Singing". Messa is right. These two actually taught singing, I'm told. Hopefully their disciples are all safely locked away. Enough praise..the album features two programmes: A TRIBUTE TO VICTOR HERBERT, sung by both Chadbournes, and A TRIBUTE TO JOHN McCORMACK, sung only by Ellis. Both sides are dedicated to Arthur Godfrey. I kid you not.

The cover is as shown..they used blank albums and pasted a sheet on the front, half of which has vanished over the years. The disc inside is, unfortunately, E- and is best heard in mono with the phase reversed and the speakers disconnected. You have been warned.
