ELMER GANTRY’S VELVET OPERA, A RARE 1968 FIRST ISSUE DIRECTION RECORD LABEL LP IN LAMINATED PICTURE SLEEVE, CATALOGUE No 8-63300.
Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, at various times also known as "Velvet Opera", was a British rock band active in the late 1960s. Members of the band would later become members of The Strawbs, Hudson Ford and Stretch. The group emerged from a soul/blues band called 'The Five Proud Walkers'. After supporting Pink Floyd on tour, they were inspired to change their approach and become a more psychedelic outfit. The band consolidated as Richard Hudson on drums, John Ford on bass, Colin Forster on lead guitar, Jimmy Horrocks (Horovitz) on organ and flute (who left early in the band's history), and Dave Terry on vocals and harmonica. Initially just calling themselves Velvet Opera, they developed their full name when Terry took to wearing a cape and preacher's hat in the style of the title character in the 1960 film adaptation of Sinclair Lewis' novel, Elmer Gantry.
Both record labels are in Near Mint condition, super clean record labels with vivid Back text on a Yellow Background with just a few light play signs on each label.
Side 1 matrix. S 8-63300 A 1 & side 2. S 8 63300 B-2.
Both vinyl surfaces are beautiful Near Mint condition, super clean and bright vinyl surfaces to both sides, all that is visible under strong lighting are a couple of surface hairlines, there are no scratches or scuffs to either side.
The LP plays through with superb clear stereo sound quality.
The LP comes in its original polythene lined inner bag and is protected in it’s original front laminated Upton Printing Group picture sleeve and is in superb Excellent Plus condition, a glossy front panel with just mild LP storage signs and a couple of tiny corner bumps. Both edges and the spine edge are perfect. The back panel of the sleeve is clean without damage with just light handling signs and light stains near to the spine edge.
