Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light to light(+), fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. A lovely scarce stereo record with super sound throughout.

Brief Info: Originating from a soul band The Five Proud Walkers, then after supporting Pink Floyd, they radically changed their sound to psychedelic rock and released this debut album in 1968. This original on Direction, a small subsidiary of CBS, specialised in soul music, this being a clear exception. I rate this album highly, like others within this genre, it failed to sell well and is now something of a ‘lost’ gem. It was followed-up with a second album – ‘Ride a Hustler’s Dream’, but the band split, some members went on to help form Strawbs. This is a fantastic stereo example and a mini-psych classic for collectors of the more obscure late 1960s psych bands.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and actually looks better. A single format with front laminate. This covers all the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. The back is smooth, matt and unprotected. Printed and made in England by the Upton Printing Group. Includes the CBS promotional orange inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A lovely looking front with solid laminate that retains a fine shine and clarity with no lifting, very few creases or marks. Mild dulling around the rim shape seen under light, but it will take an exceptional example to better this impressive front.

Cover Back: Again in super condition with hardly any wear and very few marks. A couple of small tone stains on the spine edge and a vintage pre-decimal price in pen on the top left corner – that is something I personally have no objections with as it adds history and reminds this was actually made and purchased prior to decimalisation – the price being 36/8 (approx £1.87). This has a huge stereo sticker which has aged little, the very edge darkened only and clearly never removed. Barely any creasing and overall, still very clean with few blemishes.

Top Edge: Mainly straight with minimal wear, just a hint of thickening to the exposed card end.

Bottom Edge: Immaculate and pretty much as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with again, barely any wear. Any thickening or burring minuscule, even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The laminate end exposed strip on the front still very much present with no wear worthy of mention.

Spine and Text: Nigh-on mint: a superb spine that is solid, straight with hardly any trace of compression, the ends gently nipped in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn and even beautifully centred on a fairly narrow depth under the solid and uncracked laminate that remains ultra smooth to the fingertip. Spines this age hardly get any better.

Corners: All crisp and neat with no dinks and barely any tip rubbing. They retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this rare 1968’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined CBS promotional inner with two crisp and undamaged window circles, minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Indeed, this inner has hardly aged at all.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): side two even better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, mostly very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality and somewhat age-defying record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive and somewhat ‘lost’ psych record. Arguably one of the lesser-lauded gems from the latter 1960s which I personally rate very highly. A really lovely all-round copy that will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
