This LP, entitled "Southside Blues" by Elmore James, Eddie Taylor, and Jimmy Reed, is a "team-up" LP of several singles by two or three artists that didn't have enough singles at a particular label to justify or fill out an entire album. Chess Records had that problem with their Elmore James music library, and resolved that problem in late-1969 by releasing a joint LP with music from John Brim. In 1972, the founder of Chief Records had died a premature death, and his family sold his music catalog to Buddah Records. Buddah then released this Elmore James joint LP with recordings on Side B by Eddie Taylor and Jimmy Reed on their Cobblestone blues label subsidiary.

I own a copy of the 1972 original LP. "Southside Blues" features all of the songs Elmore James recorded for the tiny Chief Records label in 1957. And from tiny labels comes some rough-sounding recordings. This is not to say that they are unlistenable, but they are a step down from James' recordings for Meteor/Flair/Modern Records, where he was laid off a year before. Some of the better songs on this compilation are "Coming Home" (which is another "Dust My Broom" knockoff, with a more raw, powerful sound than "Dust My Blues" two years earlier), "Cry For Me Baby" (which features guitar work by Muddy Waters, listed in the liner notes under an assumed name because he was still under contract with Chess Records), an anemic early rendition of "It Hurts Me Too" (which was later rerecorded in 1963, and released in 1965 to become a posthumous hit for James), "Knocking At Your Door", and Elmore James' best recording for Chief, "The 12 Year Old Boy" (It has the MEANEST, NASTIEST guitar solo of the entire 1950s, and that is saying something!).

Some Elmore James CD compilations will feature a couple of his Chief Records singles, but this is the only compilation in ANY format that features ALL of Elmore James' Chief Records recordings in one place. Perhaps BMG Records, which owns the Buddah Records catalog, will eventually rerelease "Southside Blues" in a CD format. But until they do so, "Southside Blues" will be an essential, priceless LP to be obtained for the Elmore James fan's musical library. Get it now while you can.

No two ways about it, the most influential slide guitarist of the postwar period was Elmore James, hands down. Although his early demise from heart failure kept him from enjoying the fruits of the '60s blues revival as his contemporaries Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf did, James left a wide influential trail behind him. And that influence continues to the present time -- in approach, attitude and tone -- in just about every guitar player who puts a slide on his finger and wails the blues. (a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has TWO (2) small cutout holes in one of the corners (next to each other)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.(nothing significant)

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
