Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny, very few and faint, had to get the magnifying glass out again to see any.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: The fourth, and first concept album by ELO, a band that slowly became very popular selling vast amounts of records. This my personal favourite within their catalogue, a little less commercial than the multi-selling albums they later produced. Beautifully recorded with very strong material and sound, this copy appears very little played. Not so easily found as a UK Jet first pressing, this having the most-prized ‘G’ first stamper on side two, and ‘H’ on one, still early in the sequence. Also difficult to find with an attractive cover, the gold border areas often attract fingermarks, that once applied, are nigh-on impossible to remove. This one looks hardly handled, the only blemish is a bottom edge central rub and thin, but little else. The lyric/graphic inner sleeve also included, so often missing, this also in superbly clean visual condition, just a very small central edge split I neatly repaired to stop the risk of it widening in the future. A great album and copy that will really get your hi-fi system into full gear, strongly recommended.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and actually looking better, but the bottom edge rub has to be allowed for. A single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England with United Artists credits. Includes the original lyric/graphic inner sleeve.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Cover Front: This is a very wear-prone cover and seldom seen this clean. Minor rub traces near the bottom edge with very faint rim impression, any rub traces from this seen more critically under angled light, then only very faint. Fresh, very clean and attractive, this has avoided any marks or creasing worthy of note and will prove difficult to find better.

Cover Back: Very similar again: a very small rub trace near the top edge, little else.

Top Edge: Very straight with barely any hint of wear.

Bottom Edge: The central thinned rub apart (approx 1 inch), there is little else to fault.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with barely any wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and tiny as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression. The text is barely worn with practically asll present with just a sliver of rubbing on the ‘UAG’ prefix near the top.

Corners: Any tip rubbing or creasing tiny and light. All retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this deceptively wear-prone mid-1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Just the central bottom edge rub being the only blemish of note, but only really seen viewed end-on, so hardly a worry for most. This attractive example should please many, and probably still most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and looks even better being honest. A small and very neat repair to the small central split made by myself – I always regard this sensible as it reduces future risk of widening, even if, like most who will not store their record inside it any more. I always provide a brand new soft lined inner sleeve with all my records. This lyric-graphic inner has the matching UAG 30092 catalogue number, rounded corners and widen recessed top opening. Ultra clean, fresh and attractive with no creasing and all other edges sound, the fragile top opening very crisp and neat, as made.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with only ultra fine and whispy surface traces seen critically under bright angled light. These even finer than hairlines and totally harmless, unlined inners as most will know, are not surface-friendly. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very early Jet label album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early ‘H’ / ‘G’ stamper pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
