Emerson, Lake & Palmer
'Tarkus'
Island, UK, 1971
THE MECHANICAL Armadillo says it all; Arguably one of the most striking album covers of all time, it was ELP's mission statement on display to anyone who cared to look and listen. Their debut album 'E.L.P.' was a solid and successful introduction but 'Tarkus' took the entire creation to a new, previously uncharted level...and we couldn't get enough of it.
Conceptual, apparently, although I've never worked out what they're banging on about, the entire work is dominated by the self titled near 20 minute long magnum opus which opens and closes side one. 'Tarkus', the track, forcefully rolls the dice and walks away from the table a big, make that MASSIVE, winner. It contains every prog rock move possible including several that still haven't been fully explained and dazzles like a thousand mile smile. Sure they jazz out in a few passages but that only helped to set up the blasting prog rock assaults which were direct descendants of Crimson's 'Schizzoid Man' extravagance which bassist/vocalist Gregg Lake had previously had a stake in.
Elsewhere the going is equally as riveting with brutal shots of prog rock mayhem rubbing shoulders with well placed accoustic passages and delicate arrangements. Truly one of the most outstanding albums from this hugely influential and respected band.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
