Label Conditions: Both immaculate and struggling to find a spindle trace at all. This is a stunning example with supreme labels, playing surfaces, sound and cover. Quite possibly the best I have ever seen or heard.

Cat Number: ILPS 9186.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Moderate in theory but the really early pressings on Pink Rim are harder to find and this is probably the very best copy I have ever seen or heard. A very heavy pressing in a near immaculate cover with truly awesome clean sound and this is a difficult record with some very quiet passages but this one excelled on play-grade and was a delight to hear again.

Brief Info: Fourth brilliant album by the popular progressive trio and what a stunning copy this is, it plays beautifully with awesome clean sound. This is almost certainly the heaviest pressing of this album I have ever held, this is often found on the later Manticore label and these will be far lighter. An album of outstanding tracks and the sound quality is breathtakingly high – a real hi-fi recording that will make worthy systems reall excel. Virtuoso musicianship with all three members excelling again, this is high class, high tempo prog-rock and fans wanting a truly magnificent copy need not look any further.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high.

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-) and will prove hard to find much better. Its an unlaminated gatefold format and a real heavyweight. Thick card and superbly constructed, a quality item and rarely seen with so little wear. This one was printed and made in England by Tinsley Robor Group Ltd.

Cover Front: A magnificent looking front with the trio artwork looking stuning, worthy of a second look. This is clean and fresh and clearly modestly handled. This looks near perfect and highly attractive, even with angled viewing under light there’s barely a blemish to be seen. The lovely rich coloured artwork will seldomly be found looking much better and all ink is fully intact with barely any rub marks - a trace on the spine edge only but look hard. Barely any creasing either, just one present on the spine edge and as faint as they get and this is also folded dead square, I have seen some that are some way out. This front sets a high standard for others to match and is truly good enough to frame.

Cover Back: Very similar again and exceptional given this is more vulnerable with the thick record pressed against it for around 37 years. A mere trace of faint rubbing near the bottom edge and the lack of ringwear is highly significant as few escape it. This back includes the large Island i logo, this and the text is pristine.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Truly beautiful artwork and looking like brand new - one for the connoisseur.

Top Edges: Both unworn as new and dead straight too.

Bottom Edges: Practically unworn, the odd faint rub trace if scrutinised closely.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no real wear and no feathering. Record entered on this right outside back edge. The front right edge folds around like the early original ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ covers, this is not cut and is still perfectly sealed.

Spine and Text: A very thick and robust spine and in superb condition also. Rock solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together. All text is perfect and unworn and any rubbing barely registers - a tiny trace on the top foldline but again look very hard. With so little evidence of creasing or ink blemishing, it seems more than clear this cover has been opened few times.

Corners: Little wear at all, just the odd tiny tip rub only, few will better these I feel sure.

Cover Summary: An exceptional and beautifully attractive all round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This gorgeous item should please most collectors, the supreme artwork has more than stood the test of time and I doubt if its seen the light-of-day for decades.

The Inner: Little real wear but has the odd small mark and some edge toning/gum browning which is not so unusual for these vintage Island inners, they are very prone. The lining is fully intact and strong and all edges are neat and unsplit (bar the manufacture bottom corner vents). This one retains its fine blue colour well, many fade into near whiteness and this was robustly flipback constructed. One mild central crease. This includes the text: ‘island records ltd basing street london w11’ .

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, with an intense black finish. Heavy pressed with deep and wide grooves for super-fi sound, these have complex patterns and are pristine clean. A copy hardly played or handled on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This stunning ‘Trilogy’ plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault – and this is not the easiest record to find that will do so. With such detail and complex sound embedded, this was a record that could be easily worn if not treated with due respect and many often have crackle and distortion – this has none. Strong, dynamic and powerful sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is a record with real hi-fi quality and will make any worthy system sound fantastic. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. The beginning of ‘Abaddon’s Bolero’ is what you would expect, a very quiet, near silent beginning that gradually builds up. These types of tracks are the ultimate test for good pressings and silence is near impossible, but this copy plays supremely well with virtually nothing unwanted. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult indeed to match or find significantly better. This album and copy are strongly recommended - a prog classic for sure.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
