ELTON JOHNElton John
UK DJM (DJLPS 406) ORIGINAL PRESSING OF ELTON JOHN'S 1970 EPONYMOUS, SECOND LP
BEAUTIFUL CONDITION - BARELY PLAYED
PRESSED ON WHAT AT FIRST SIGHT APPEARS TO BE NORMAL BLACK VINYL BUT WHICH WHEN HELD UP TO THE LIGHT REVEALS ITS TRUE PURPLE TRANSLUCENT COLOUR - COMMON WITH PYE PRESSINGS OF THE EARLY 1970s
MATRIX: DJLPS 406 A4 / DJLPS 406 B1
THE RECORD IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL SOFT BACKED, MATT AND TEXTURED GATEFOLD SLEEVE WITH INTERNALLY PRINTED LYRICS AND FACTORY SEALED LEFT-SIDE EDGE "Printed and made by the E.J. Day Group, London and Bedford"
COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL PLAIN WHITE INNER SLLEVE
'Empty Sky' was followed by 'Elton John', a more focused and realised record that deservedly became his first hit.
John and Bernie Taupin's songwriting had become more immediate and successful; in particular, John's music had become sharper and more diverse, rescuing Taupin's frequently nebulous lyrics.
Next to the increased sense of song-craft, the most noticeable change on Elton John is the addition of Paul Buckmaster's grandiose string arrangements.
Buckmaster's orchestrations are never subtle, but they never overwhelm the vocalist, nor do they make the songs schmaltzy. Instead, they fit the ambitions of John and Taupin, as the instant standard "Your Song" illustrates.
Even with the strings and choirs that dominate the sound of the album, John manages to rock out on a fair share of the record.
Elton John remains one of his finest records.
Side 1:
Your Song
I Need You To Turn To
Take Me To The Pilot
No Shoe Strings On Louise
First Episode At Hienton
Side 2:
Sixty Years On
Border Song
The Greatest Discovery
The Cage
The King Must Die
LABELS: NEAR MINT
Clean, unmarked labels with possibly just one spindle trace
VINYL Visual: NEAR MINT
Both surfaces shine like new - Side One is unmarked, Side Two has a couple of harmless superficial hairlines
VINYL Audio: NEAR MINT/EXCELLENT+
A beautifully recorded album with crystal clear, deep, rich and detailed sound and my play-check at volume found little to fault to strong loud cut, nothing but a touch of low-level surface on some of the track divisions and the occasional soft background tick - nothing in the slightest intrusive - lovely copy
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT+
One of the finest examples of this thin, delicate, textured gatefold I have seen - crisp, clean and fresh with just a faint mark where a price sticker has been removed
POST & PACKING:
A PROTECTIVE POLY SLEEVE, NEW ANTI-STATIC LINER, QUALITY BOX (NOT ENVELOPE) MAILER AND AMPLE STIFFENERS ARE ALWAYS USED TO ENSURE THAT YOUR RECORD ARRIVES SAFELY
