After a 14-year absence from Memphis, Elvis Presley returned to cut what was certainly his greatest album (or, at least, a tie effort with his RCA debut LP from early 1956). The fact that From Elvis in Memphis came out as well as it did is something of a surprise, in retrospect -- Presley had a backlog of songs he genuinely liked that he wanted to record and had heard some newer soul material that also attracted him, and none of it resembled the material that he'd been cutting since his last non-soundtrack album, six years earlier. And he'd just come off of the NBC television special which, although a lot of work, had led him to the realization that he could be as exciting and vital a performer in 1969 as he'd been a dozen years before. And for what was practically the last time, the singer cut his manager, Tom Parker, out of the equation, turning himself over to producer Chips Moman. The result was one of the greatest white soul albums (and one of the greatest soul albums) ever cut, with brief but considerable forays into country, pop, and blues as well. Presley sounds rejuvenated artistically throughout the dozen cuts off the original album, and he's supported by the best playing and backup singing of his entire recording history.

I can't for the life of me, think of another album, sung and produced by the white man, that deserves the attribute of "Soul" album more than this one (I am white, so there's no racial element here). But lo and behold, here's a member of such rare species. Here is the KING doing his royal thing. Whether he was manipulated into recording four-sides worth of prime deep-south soul stuff in Chips Moman's "American Studios", or he simply wanted a reprieve from the godawful soundtrack drek Colonel Parker dragged him into, Elvis Presley recorded what is a true soul masterpiece in more ways than one: His final, big work - the "From Elvis in Memphis" album. It would be all downhill from here. One listen to "Long Black Limousine" which simply radiates Gospel in all directions, and you will realize why this guy was a KING. There was no such voice - certainly in the Caucasian world - ever. Personnel includes a proverbial who-is-who of Muscle Shoals Deep-Soul: In addition to Elvis Presley (vocals, piano);  Tommy Cogbill (guitar, bass); Reggie Young (guitar); John Hughey (steel guitar); Ed Kollis (harmonica); Jackie Thomas (saxophone, trombone); Andrew Lowe, Glen Spreen, J.P. The until-recently-defunct "Mobile Fidelity Labs" audiophile album vinyl pressings were not only analogue, audiophile masterpieces and connoisseur delights, they have become true pieces of audio history and lore. These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. They are characterized by the massively extended dynamic and frequency range, mastering from the very first generation of original master tapes, almost compulsive attention paid to the detail and integrity of the pressing, and the highest quality of the material (only the "virgin-", audiophile-grade vinyl was used, and most of the titles were pressed by RCA/Victor and/or Warner-Pioneer corporations of Japan, both known for their near-obsessive attention paid to the fine sonic detail and audio craftsmanship); a special proprietary  technology was used to achieve analogue-like, warm, translucent, radiant, vivid and all-encompassing sound. To this day, many of these recordings remain unsurpassed, delivering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible, without any loss of musical information inherent in the standard practice of mastering from the inferior "production" copies.  EVER SINCE THE MOBILE FIDELITY SOUND LABS TEMPORARILY CLOSED IN DECEMBER OF 1999 (ONLY TO REOPEN IN 2003), THESE RECORDINGS HAVE BEEN ESCALATING IN VALUE AND DEMAND. This is a rare opportunity to acquire this great album in its FINEST audio format, no longer in print, and no longer easily obtainable.

For its extraordinary contribution to the contemporary music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, songwriters and general public, or for some other inherent quality, this album was voted one of top-100 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted in 1987 by Paul Gambaccini, the legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals   (►click here  for the complete album listing)

(b)          The album comes with the original MFSL cardboard inner sleeve

(c)           The record is STILL in its original inner, hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.

(e)             IN addition, the record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the top and bottom seams

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (nothing significant)
