Description
ELVIS PRESLEY Heartbreak Hotel/I Was The One (UK) His Master’s Voice 7M 385 (March 1956 - Arguably one of the most important records ever made. Elvis had already established himself in America as an upcoming star with his five superb rockabilly singles on Sun, all of which were reissued by RCA-Victor in December 1955, but this was his first “new” record with RCA and it was Elvis’' introduction to the rest of the world. A lot of people [including executives at RCA] didn't know what to make of this “alien” sound an echoey blues/country hybrid that made no sense to conservative audiences. However it eventually took off and became a massive worldwide hit, the second record [after Carl Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes”] to top all three Billboard charts and the biggest selling record of 1956. Songwriter Mae Axton [who part-wrote “Heartbreak Hotel”] had been instrumental in introducing Elvis to Colonel Tom Parker and securing his RCA contract with Steve Sholes in Nashville. “Heartbreak Hotel” was recorded in Nashville on Jan 10 1956 and was released in America as an RCA-Victor single on Jan 27. Elvis was backed by his regular band: Scotty Moore guitar, Bill Black bass, and D.J. Fontana drums, supplemented by session players Chet Atkins on rhythm guitar and Floyd Cramer on piano. The session was produced by Steve Sholes and Chet Atkins. Note this British HMV copy is a very first pressing with the American “Tree Publishing” on the label [later U.K. pressings had “Frank Music/B.F. Wood]. Note too that any British pressing of HMV 7M 385 are much rarer than the HMV POP 182 issue on 78. 45s were still a new concept in Britain in 1956 and 78s sold in much larger numbers.) All descriptive comments about the 1950s records listed (and their recording context) were written especially for my blog web page and consist of original text.
Grade/Condition: the grade on this is very difficult because it looks EX- or even better under normal light (as you can see in the pic above) but under the very strong light I use to grade and if I was very strict I'd maybe grade it around VG to VG+ only because it has quite a lot of very light cross scuffs that seem to be from the sleeve. Labels are very clean (EX) however the centre is missing due to someone pushing it out to play the record on a US style large hole player rather than a British small hole one. This centre can be replaced with an artifical centre such as the yellow one below. Record comes in a reproduction sleeve which is MINT. )
Free post WORLDWIDE ! (This item will include tracking)
IMPORTANT: All records graded carefully under strong light. I have a long standing good reputation for grading and I strongly recommend taking a glance at my grading info linked below.
Detailed information on my grading system is here. If this record is made in South Korean please click here for further information about South Korean pressings. Most 7 inch records $10 and over will be sent in quality Japanese made 'seal-able' plastic outer sleeves and (if near mint) more often than not they will also be sent in quality Japanese made 'soft' plastic inner sleeves for extra protection against sleeve scuffs and the like.NOTE: If BEST OFFER is nominated - All prices include free worldwide shipping which may in some cases include registration/tracking on higher priced items. The set price is the price I am after but I may consider a lesser price for e-bay members who are either ... located in AUSTRALIA/NZ/SOUTH KOREA/JAPAN ... OR ... has a post box address and/or high feedback ... OR ... is someone who is a regular customer/seller I already know.
PAYPAL ONLY - NO LOCAL PICKUPS. Thanks. While I'm in Australia I will be keeping my listings in this store at (around) 100 items, so as items sell they will be replaced with similar items. Please keep an eye on further listings ... I have quite a bit of similar stuff as well as many South Korean pressing LPs from the dictatorship period which often have different track listings due to government censorship or 'subversive' songs.
