Description

"Hound Dog"/"Don't Be Cruel" (RCA) 447-0608 + Rare PS MINT!

This double sided smash brought "Elvis Mania" to a fever pitch in the summer of 1956. "Hound Dog" had been a staple of Elvis' live show for some time but he didn't record the raunchy Leiber-Stoller R&B tune until July, 1956- after he had performed it in tux & tails singing to a basset hound on the Steve Allen TV show. Originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton, Elvis drew his inspiration from Freddie Bell & the Bellboys, who included the song in their live Las Vegas repertoire. "Hound Dog" reached #1 for 1 week but the flip-side, "Don't Be Cruel", stayed on top of the charts for an incredible 11 weeks beginning on August 4, 1956. "Don't Be Cruel" was an original song brought to Elvis through his Hill & Range publishing deal. It was written by one of his favorite songwriters, Otis Blackwell. This pressing is the "Gold Standard Series" issue from 1965- appearing with a different picture sleeve than the 1956 release. The full color front cover is a sexy "Kissin' Cousins" era publicity still, the back has a complete list of "Elvis Presley Singles" through 1965. It has U.S. RCA Victor black "dog on top" labels on a black vinyl record, all in beautiful condition. Sleeve has rarely been handled & is in pristine MINT condition (except for 1 miniscule 1/8" "notch" near the upper right corner- possibly manufactured like this). The record is in MINT unplayed condition with no scratches. Overall condition M/M.
