As most Rock ‘n’ Roll fans will already know this LP was the first Presley LP to be issued in the UK. The year was 1956 and Rock ‘n’ Roll was still very much in its infancy on these shores…though interest was growing fast!
It is fascinating to read the sleeve notes on this album. Written by Bob Dawbarn the notes refer to Elvis as a Jazz phenomenon! It talks about his singing as an odd mixture of influences…hillbilly, rhythm and blues and to ‘Mystery Train’ as the type of number popularised by the British ‘skiffle’ singers!
In mint condition this rare and very highly sought after LP has a record price guide value of £550 though copies have been known to top this figure. Unfortunately this copy is nowhere near mint!
THE COVER/SLEEVE
The cover is at best FAIR-POOR (standard record collector grades). The outer edges have been taped. This looks to have done several years ago but some parts of the tape are still ‘sticky’; there is a major tear across the front cover from Elvis’s mouth to the edge of the sleeve; there is a 4x1-inch missing section of the front cover (along the open edge). On the back of the sleeve the flipback is damaged in places. A name has been written in pen at the top. However, ALL the original text and information/notes are still clearly visible and easily read. See scan below of front of sleeve.
LABELS
Both labels are in reasonably good shape and ALL information, tracks etc. are totally clear and readable. Side 1 label has a name written on it and Side 2 label has a name on it & appears to have had a piece of tape removed from it. (see scans below of both labels)
THE RECORD/VINYL
I have played the record all the way through…EVERY track. The sound is consistent throughout. Remarkably it plays better than you would think! Under a strong light there are many noticeable marks but these do not translate into clicks on the record. There are no major scratches that affect the sound. The record does NOT jump…it does NOT stick. There IS surface background noise throughout but on the real rocking tracks the original sound comes through remarkably well. On the more gentle ‘I’m Counting On You’ (probably the record’s quietest track) the surface noise is more prevalent. No doubt it is Elvis’s dynamic performance that catches your attention and you tend to dismiss ‘other’ sounds to concentrate on this marvellous music!!
In standard grades I would place the record in the ‘GOOD’ grade.
I have tried to give a full & accurate description of this record. To be honest it is NOT in great shape.
Clearly this record is not worth anything like the mint value of £550 but it is still a highly collectable item…because it IS Elvis’s first UK LP release with that glorious & much copied/imitated front cover picture…let alone the most memorable rock 'n' roll music ever committed to wax!!!
