Label/Format: Island – a very early second pressing on the pink rim format. These have matt surfaces with a very gentle hint of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. This copy superbly pressed by EMI and plays with fantastic sound throughout.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Originals on the Pink Label are getting harder to find especially in decent condition, it was one of the last original albums to be issued on this label. The second pressing on this label are seen more often, but a copy that appears barely even played are of more of a premium. This copy owned by one person from new. As often, he put a sticker with his ‘P’ initial on the cover (nothing this time on the labels). The sticker is date-coded 16 Aug 71.

Original Year of Release: 1970, and not available long before the pink rim pressing replaced the full pink label. Indeed, this was the penultimate original Island album issued on the full pink format, the final one being ‘Tea For the Tillerman’ by Cat Stevens.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Featuring Keith Emerson, formerly of The Nice, Greg Lake (King Crimson) and Carl Palmer (Atomic Rooster) these three played high octane progressive music. So sad now Keith and Greg now gone. Keyboard driven rock with a classical feel, this debut for me still remains, for many, their best and definitive album. Featuring only six tracks but every one superb and of course the final song, ‘Lucky Man’ remains one of the definitive prog classics, and has Greg Lake ever sounded better? A sublime song with stunning sound. This has to be heard via the vinyl source. Near it’s end, when the Moog kicks in, the bass frequencies hit below 60 Hz and on a big system this actually pulls at the stomach muscles. This is true hi-fi nirvana and no other format I have heard to date betters it. Although not a first label copy, this is a superb pressing and appears hardly even played. The audio quality is magnificent and clean throughout. A prog masterwork of high-fidelity sound and production with complex groove information often destroyed by vintage, often heavy-tracking mono record players. Fewer survive with focus fully intact and play silent these days, this a near exceptional example. The cover is equally difficult, and this one has far less wear than most seen. So a copy worthy of strong consideration if audio quality is the most important factor rather than a pink label.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated single format with matt, smooth surfaces, highly intolerant and very prone to wear, especially with an early, heavier pressed record inside since 1970. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: One of Island’s most intolerant covers and seldom seen without often heavy rubbing and deep penetrating ring wear. Both front and back have largely avoided ring wear with only faint impression traces only. In fact rubbing in general on the entire cover is sparse with only a little on the edges, it remains clean and still fresh. A fine crease near the spine each side with little else, the lack of sticker marks or damage always good news. The sticker adds history, but will possibly remove with care – I decided to let it be.

Top Edge: Very thin, but still straight with barely any wear.

Bottom Edge: A small central rub with any other traces very light and patchy.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and sharp with any thickening very little and light. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid and straight with some patchy compression, the ends are tapered in manufacture. A very small central rub and traces near the thin ends. The really good news, all text is present and strong, never to be taken for granted on this one.

Corners: The delicate corners have minimal rubbing and retain impressive crisp shape with no knocks.

Cover Summary: In terms of this uncompromising cover, this can considered a highly respectable example with far less wear and ageing than most seen these days. One to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain solid white unlined inner has aged little. The paper still mostly white with minimal discolouration. Any creasing mostly fine and light with all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy probably only played a couple or three times (including my mandatory play-grade) on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a fantastic heavy-pressed record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog classic plays up to and most even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. An album with several very quiet passages, but even these areas are impressive. Few available copies will outperform this still very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly, with due care and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
