EMERSON LAKE & PALMER - TARKUS
A truly exquisite condition copy of this increasingly rare and sought after 1971 very 1st UK press ELP prog rock classic, with earliest A-1U, B-1U vinyl matrix numbers on the palm tree/pink rim Island label, STEREO, ILPS 9155
The dead wax matrix numbers are :
Side 1 ILPS 9155 A - 1 U with stampers "2" and "L" at 5 o'clock and 11 o'clock respectively, and etched "PORKY"
Side 2 ILPS 9155 B - 1 U with stampers "1" and "H" at 1 o'clock and 7 o'clock respectively, and etched "PECKO"
The appearance and overall condition of the flat and nicely weighted vinyl is truly NEAR MINT (NM). In normal daylight each side of the vinyl comes across as in gleaming, jet black, perfect "as new" condition : and even with very close scrutiny under a bright light I can find no marks at all...amazing!
Truly remarkable condition for this 49 year old antiquity - and virtually impossible to come across a UK 1st pressing of this prog gem in original condition such as this.
The labels are similarly near mint (NM) also. Gorgeous condition labels with all black writing upon the off white, and iconic blue/yellow/green palm tree background and the coveted pink rim, in pristine condition. Not even the usual one or two faint spindle trails next to the centre hole...amazing!
The condition of the non-laminated and rarer E.J. Day outer gatefold sleeve is again near mint (NM). The thick cardboard remains fully intact with no creasing and no horizontal abrasions either - this gatefold is notoriously prone to marking in general and horizontal abrasions in particular - but this copy is completely devoid of any wear and tear marks. All edges, including the spine, remain firm with no scuffing at all (apart from just a couple of very small and very, very light inconsequential scuff marks on the top and bottom edges - barely noticeable), each corner remains a perfectly defined right angle with no rubbing, and the opening edges are similarly rigid with no fraying or feathering at all. All colours, text, and art work remain in virtually "as new" condition - rich, vibrant and great clarity and definition, and that of course also applies to the inside of the gatefold for which the condition is impossible to fault. What can I say? Remarkable!
The quality of the audio is outstanding. There is nothing more satisfying than placing a 1970's classic prog rock LP onto the turntable, turning up the volume, and as the stylus meets the vinyl...silence! And that's exactly the case here with this barely played (twice to my knowledge) prog gem. Fantastic tone and clarity throughout, even at higher volume and on higher frequencies. No skips, jumps, repeats, sticks, clicks, or background crackle at all. Wonderful STEREO audio reproduction with the whole album making for a great listen even after all these years - timeless! Vintage 1970's prog rock at it's very best, on pristine vinyl completely devoid of any defects - who could ask for more?!
