Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with just light to light+ spindle marks with very modest visibility, most all under light. One ultra fine surface mark on side two with scrutiny under light, almost invisible.

Cat Number: ILPS 9132.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The original on the Pink Label are getting harder to find especially in top playing conditions and the cover is near impossible without substantial rubbing and ringwear. A record that suffers groove damage very easily, the pinks rarely will be found much better than this. The intense sounds often suffer distortion and crackle unless treated well and played on more sympathetic equipment. This amazing example has very clean playing surfaces with immaculate, and dare I say, practically ‘perfect’ sound and a super cover, it totally blew me away for looks and audio quality, and few ever do. A copy preserved like this is rare and make no mistake about it, this will delight most all Island, progressive and ELP collectors.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Featuring Keith Emerson, formerly of The Nice, Greg Lake (King Crimson) and Carl Palmer (Atomic Rooster) these three played high octane progressive music. Keyboard driven rock with a classical feel this debut for me still remains their best and definitive album. Featuring only six tracks but every one superb and of course the final song, ‘Lucky Man’ remains one of the definitive prog classics. A sublime song with stunning sound. This has to be heard via the vinyl source. Near its end, when the Moog kicks in right at the death, the bass frequencies hit below 60 Hz and on a big system this actually pulls at the stomach muscles. This is true hi-fi nirvana and nothing can better it. This is a beautiful copy that plays with practically flawless sound with nothing unwanted. I realise this is a bold statement but this truly is stunning. The lack of irritating crackle even on the quiet passages is so unusual to hear as Island were not alway the best of pressings, but this one was pressed by EMI and the quality is more assured. There is no clipping or distortions either, up there with the best-pressed and carefully looked-after pink examples I have yet seen, heard or had and equally as the super copy I sold a few weeks ago on Ebay. Also for once, a lovely UK cover, the general lack of major rubbing and ringwear is always a huge bonus and near impossible to find especially with the pink label record inside. Another super example that will thrill those who missed-out on my last one.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high indeed, one of the most wear-prone covers ever made and is seldom seen even a decent VG with a proper EX example being a great example. Well this one even exceeds that and it will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better. Highly rub and ringwear prone and often seen with sticker tears. It’s very difficult to find with none and this beautiful, but delicate design will not be easy to find better.

Cover Grade and Format: EX (or very close to). An unlaminated single format and highly intolerant of abuse, overhandling and bad storage. This one was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front & Back: One of rock’s most intolerant covers and seldom seen this nice. Both sides have only ultra faint traces of any friction rubs, most of any present on the edges. No sticker tears, major marks or grubbiness but a little fine creasing is seen near the edges but this shows little with normal viewing. Ultra faint adhesive residue traces are seen near the top edge in manufacture, so light it’s hardly worthy of mention. Ringwear is the usually the main concern on this cover and glad to state this has barely any. The front has none and the back just a very faint arc trace near the left edge. I really do consider both sides exceptional and few will better than significantly, especially with pink label copy inside. Experienced owners of this record will know this to be true.

Top Edge: Any traces of rubbing are tiny and very faint indeed, and this is still very straight.

Bottom Edge: As above, both have corner rubs however.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and with minimal compression. Most of any rubbing is confined to the ends with just traces on the folds with a few sporadic small surface chips.

Corners: All the corners have rubbed: the top pair only with small tip rubs but slightly larger on the bottom pair, most bottom right. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: In terms of this uncompromising cover, this is a very nice all round example, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This unusually fine item should please many, if not most collectors. This includes its original plain white unlined inner in very good condition. It has a bottom edge split and a few light marks and mild ruffling rather than creasing. These paper only inners at 40-years-old rarely survive unblemished or aged and I prefer not to swap them if they are available with the original album.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+ (at least) with just a couple of three ultra fine and faint surface marks as mere hairlines that have no sound at all. Mega faint removal traces seen in direct sunlight (how many will ever avoid these?, let’s be honest). A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, with an intense black finish. Very solidly pressed with deep and wide grooves for super-fi sound, these have complex patterns and are very clean indeed. A copy lightly played and an exceptional Island piece. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic pink i ELP debut plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault – and this is not the easiest record to find that will do so. With such detail and complex sound embedded, this was a record that could be easily destroyed if not treated with due respect and many often have crackle and distortion – this has NONE. Strong, dynamic and powerful sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is a vintage record with genuine hi-fi audio quality and will make any worthy system sound superb. No pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a challenging album. A record with massive highs and lows, real church organ and deep bass synths, that will shake the foundations and then delicate piano pieces and some real quiet passages. These type of records are the ultimate test for pressing standards and silence is near impossible, but this copy excels and will blow away the CD versions for realism and dynamics. Few copies will match or outperform this beautiful pink pressing I feel sure – I have heard several noisy copies of this before, both on pink and pink rim repressings and often clean looking copies can disappoint. Remember groovewear cannot be seen, only heard, this has none whatsoever. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. The piano parts are crisp and sharp and those demanding sonic parts on the finale are beautifully focused and sharp. Even the immensely difficult to track church organ is totally focused and devoid of the clipping and crackle that spoil so many of these. Tracking effortless and maximum pleasure is gained from this wonderful original that almost takes you into the recording studio itself. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this vintage prog classic. This copy will prove very difficult indeed to match or find better. This album and copy are strongly recommended, with both parts in very fine condition. Personally, I never would risk a purchase of this album un-play-graded, there is just too much risk on such a piece. Island, progressive and ELP collectors, with is worthy of high recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
