A BREAKDOWN OF THE ARTIST/S :-

One the most prominent supergroups of the early 70s, ELP comprised Keith Emerson (Born 2 November 1944, Todmorden, Lancashire, England; keyboards), Greg Lake (Born 10 November 1948, Bournemouth, Dorset, England; vocals, bass) and Carl Palmer (Born Carl Frederick Kendall Palmer, 20 March 1950, Birmingham, West Midlands, England; drums, percussion). Formerly, the super-trio were, respectively, members of the Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster. After making their debut at the Guildhall, Plymouth, they appeared at the much-publicized 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. That same year, they were signed to Island Records and completed their self-titled debut album. The work displayed their desire to fuse classical music influences with rock in determinedly flourishing style. Early the following year, at Newcastle's City Hall they introduced their arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition. The concept album Tarkus followed some months later and revealed their overreaching love of musical drama to the full. The theme of the work was obscure but the mechanical armadillo, pictured on the sleeve, proved a powerful and endearing image.

Extensive tours and albums followed over the next three years including Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery and an extravagant triple live album. Having set up their own label and established themselves as a top-grossing live act, the members branched out into various solo ventures, reuniting for part of Works. This double album included their memorably dramatic reading of Aaron Copland's "Fanfare For The Common Man' which took them close to the top of the British singles charts. With solo outings becoming increasingly distracting, ELP released one final studio album, 1978"s Love Beach, before embarking on a farewell world tour. With changes in the music industry wrought by punk and new wave bands, it was probably an opportune moment to draw a veil over their career.

It was not until 1986 that a serious re-formation was attempted but Carl Palmer (then in the highly successful Asia) would not be drawn. Instead, Emerson and Lake teamed up with hit drummer Cozy Powell (Born Colin Powell, 29 December 1947, England, d. 5 April 1998). The collaboration produced one chart album Emerson, Lake And Powell, which included the pomp of Holst among the many classical influences. When Powell quit, Palmer regrouped with his colleagues for a projected album in 1987, but the sessions proved unfruitful. Instead, Emerson recruited Hush drummer Robert Berry for To The Power Of Three, which sold poorly. In the early 90s the original trio re-formed and produced Black Moon, followed by another live album. Whilst their concert tour was well attended, no new ground was being broken and a new studio album, 1994's In The Hot Seat, proved to be a pale shadow of their former material. Nevertheless, the trio has continued to tour when solo commitments allow and remain a hugely popular live attraction.

THE HISTORY OF THE RECORD :- Brain Salad Surgery is the fourth studio album by progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in 1973 and the first under their Manticore Records imprint. It fuses rock and classical themes. Greg Lake wrote the lyrics for the album with the assistance (on two tracks, "Karn Evil 9: 3rd Impression" and "Benny the Bouncer") of former King Crimson bandmate (and, beginning with this album, frequent ELP collaborator) Peter Sinfield. This was the first Emerson, Lake & Palmer album to have no songwriting contributions from Carl Palmer. The cover art is by H. R. Giger.

The first pressings of this album were actually pressed in the USA and put into UK sleeves because of the oiul crisis in the UK at the time. Thats why the sleeve bears the Cat No K53501 & the vinyl Cat No is MC 66669

THE VINYL VISUALLY :- On initial inspection of this piece of vinyl I cannot see any areas of immediate concern. The vinyl sits perfectly flat on the turntable so there are no nasty warps to worry about. If being critical I would say the vinyl is a little cloudy but this may have been how it was pressed rather than how it's been looked after. I have only noted a few very small whispy hairlines that do not affect play. A lovely piece of vinyl. Excellent Plus condition visually.

THE VINYL PLAY GRADED :- The playgrading of the vinyl reveals no lessening in the sound quality. It lives up to its visual grading. There is barely any surface noise. If being critical there is a tiny amount of static in the dead wax areas and run ins but this can be found on brand new records. The sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. I feel certain this album has been barely played or maybe even unplayed and stored well over the years. I would grade the audio playback as Near Mint condition.

THE SLEEVE FRONT CONDITION :- This is the very earliest 1st press textured intricate trifold die-cut sleeve. The front of the sleeve is free from writing, free from stickers or evidence of previously removed stickers. The sleeve reveals no ringwear. There are 2 or 3 light spidery creases protruding from the edges. There is a little wear to the sharp edges of the die-cut areas. There is some corner rounding. The colours are bright and crisp. I would grade the front of the cover as all in all Excellent condition.

THE SLEEVE REAR CONDITION :- The rear of the sleeve is free from writing, free from stickers or evidence of previously removed stickers. There is a small crease in the top right corner on the rear of the sleeve but no real ringwear. Just some corner rounding as per front. The black has foxed in areas over the years. I would grade the rear as Near Excellent condition.

THE INNER TRIFOLD CONDITION :- Almost in Perfect condition with just a little wear to the sharp edges of the die-cut. Excellent Plus condition.

THE EDGES CONDITION :- The edges show some rubbing which is not uncommon on this cover

THE LABEL SIDE ONE CONDITION :- Original Manticore label in excellent order free from stickers or writing and no damage at all. No signs of play around the spindle hole. Near Mint condition.

THE LABEL SIDE TWO CONDITION :- Original Manticore label in excellent order free from stickers or writing and no damage at all. No signs of play around the spindle hole. Near Mint condition.

THE SPINE CONDITION :- The writing on the spine is clear, showing all catalogue numbers and album info. Excellent condition generally with a little rubbing to the actual seam.

THE INNER SLEEVE CONDITION :- An original ATCO inner which only came with very first pressings in Very Good condition apart from a knifing split on the bottom seam

THE POSTER :- The poster is in great shape with no rips or tears. Excellent condition.

We use a V.P.I. HW-16.5 record cleaning machine to clean your vinyl. "A highly recommended machine" as quoted by Stereophile magazine. This removes any excess dirt before playing

HOW WE PACKAGE YOUR RECORD :- 

Your record will be package very securely to minimise any risk of damage during transit. We remove the record from the outer sleeve unless asked not to do so. This helps to minimise the risk of seam spliting. We use a high quality record mailer which is designed to give superior protection for your vinyl record. We place stiffeners either side of the record for added protection. The album will also be placed in a 450 gram Poly outer sleeve for even extra added protection
