UK FIRST PRESSING PINK ISLAND LABEL WITH FIRST STATE 'i' and 'Side One' / 'Side Two' on label (this was changed fairly quickly making this copy a very early one) VINYL LP WITH ORIGINAL WHITE 'MADE IN ENGLAND' INNER SLEEVE.

ELP's debut album was a stunning artistic success, merging rock, classical and elements of jazz. The band was a universe away from the tired blues-rock most groups were still trudging out in 1969/70. ELP's display of musical dexterity was jaw-dropping. Punk and fashion may not have been kind to the legacy of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, the songs were long, the ideas were grand, and the band didn't always do themselves any favours with the enormity of their live shows, but the music alone that they created on their initial albums is without precendent. Only Yes and King Crimson were forging ahead in any comparable manner to the way ELP were. Not the 2010s X Factor karaoke the masses are subjected to these days, no one else made music like this at the time, and no one has since. You really did have to be able to play your instrument to make music like this! Fresh from the original King Crimson, Lake's pure and simple production technique was to fashion a dry, live-in-the-studio sound which has made this particular album, when on an original Pink Island first pressing, something of an audiophile test record. Even if you didn't like the music - and what's not to like? - just the recorded sound of the album is about as good as analogue gets - grumbling deep bass tones, sparkling upper mids and crisp highs. We cannot think of any 'better' Hammond organ recorded sound actually, Lake captures every element of the instrument and every throaty nuance of Keith Emerson's playing. Carl Palmer's drums are sublime: it actually sounds like someone playing a kit in the corner of your room - none of the modern digital compressed/gated cardboard box sound so beloved of studio engineers today - Palmer's kit is alive, breathy and punchy.

The better your hi fi, the more amazing this album sounds - every time we upgrade a component we refer back to it, and usually find it sounds even better than the last time we played it - so, here's a delightful true first pressing copy with some minor defects for a discerning listener who knows how good an original analogue record should sound, they're hard to find in any condition, so this should satisfy all but a perfectionist.

DISC: EXCELLENT MINUS. NO SCRATCHES AND BARELY ANY SPINDLE WEAR. THERE ARE SOME LIGHT HAIRLINES AND A LIGHT SCUFF ON SIDE ONE WHICH IS NOT A SCRATCH AND DOES NOT SOUND. CLEAN LABELS BOTH SIDES. A SPLENDID PLAYING COPY WITH SUPERB AUDIO. NO SKIPS OR JUMPS, NO DETRIMENTAL SURFACE NOISES, SOME STATIC POP/TICKS IN A FEW PLACES WHICH IS FAIRLY NORMAL FOR THESE ISLAND PRESSINGS, AND ONLY IN THE QUIETEST PASSAGES - THE DYMANICS ON THIS ALBUM ARE VAST AND EVEN NEW COPIES HAD SOME STYLUS IN THE GROOVE NOISE IN THE ALMOST SILENT PARTS. IN SHORT, THIS VINYL COULD DO WITH A BETTR SLEEVE BUT THE DISC ITSELF WOULD BE A SIGNIFICANT UPGRADE FOR MANY - FINDING A NEAR MINT COPY IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE THESE DAYS, WE WOULD SAY THIS COPY IS WAY ABOVE AVERAGE AND DEFINATELY MORE ENJOYABLE TO LISTEN TO THAN THE LATER PINK RIM AND MANTICORE PRESSINGS.
