Achievement: Brought shehnai to the center stage of Indian classical music; Became the third classical musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

The legendary shehnai player, Ustad Bismillah Khan was one of India's most celebrated classical musicians. Bismillah Khan has been credited with taking the shehnai from the marriage mandap to the concert hall.

Bismillah Khan was born on March 21, 1916 at Dumraon, Bihar. His ancestors were court musicians in the princely state of Dumraon in Bihar. Ustad Bismillah Khan was trained under his uncle, the late Ali Bux `Vilayatu', a shehnai player attached to Varanasi's Vishwanath Temple.

Ustad Bismillah Khan brought Shehnai to the center stage of Indian classical music with his concert in the Calcutta All India Music Conference in 1937. He had the honor of performing at Delhi's Red Fort on the occasion of India's Independence on August 15, 1947. Bismillah Khan mesmerized everyone with his heart-touching rendering of Raga Kafi from the Red Fort on the eve of India's first Republic Day ceremony, on January 26, 1950.

Ustad Bismillah Khan was an icon of the composite culture of India. He was a worshipper of both Allah and Saraswati. Ustad Bismillah was greatly attached to the city of Varanasi and the river Ganga. Once, a rich American university invited Bismillah to be their musician-in-residence, and asked him to state his terms. Bismillah Khan replied, he would only come if he could bring his beloved Ganga with him. Ustad Bismillah Khan performed in various parts of the world. He performed in Afghanistan, Europe, Iran, Iraq, Canada, West Africa, USA, USSR, Japan, Hong Kong and almost every capital city across the world.

Ustad Bismillah Khan was a recipient of many honors and awards. These include: Padma Vibhushan (1980), Padma Bhushan (1968), Padma Shri (1961), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1956), and Tansen Award by Govt. of Madhya Pradesh. In 2001, Ustad Bismillah Khan became the third classical musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

Ustad Bismillah Khan died on August 21, 2006 due to cardiac arrest.

Very early vintage of this LP - the label does NOT have the white circle around the entire circumference.

Perfoming -

• Raaga: Todi: A unique performance illustrating how well a wind instrument can combine with a bowed string instrument particularly if the performers are of the calibre of Ustad Bismillah Kahn and Prof. V.G. Jog. The Raaga Todi has a scale which is clearly distinguished from all other scales of Indian melody and so there can be no confusion as to its identity. It is like this: DO, RE (Flat), Fa (Sharp), La (Flat), Ti, Do (Octave), Ti, La (Flat), So, Fa (Sharp), La (Flat), Fa (Sharp), Mi (Flat), Re (Flat), Do. After doing a short alap (unbarred elaboration) the duet performers have taken up a slow composition to portray with pathetic colour the mood of the raaga. At the end the two veteran musicians join in a series of interesting improvisations in a faster tempo.
• Raaga: Durga: Ustad Bismillah Khan and Prof. V.G. Jog have played Raaga Durga, a pentatonic melody, the scale being: Do, Re, Fa, So, La, Do (Octave). This melody is suitable for the night. The spirit of the melody is robust as may well be felt from the rendering given by the two master players. The composition or 'Gat', is in medium tempo which is made faster towards the end. The next piece is a 'Dhun', a light melody. A 'Dhun' is usually a homogeneous compound of classical and folk melody. On both sides Tabla accompaniment is by kjanai Dutta whose brilliant strokes have added life to the rhythm and have made music bright and enjoyable.

CONDITION Details:

The JACKET is in Near Mint minus condition. The jacket is completely intact, with NO seam splits. The jacket shows some light shelf wear - primarily the corners and seams. The jacket has NO drill holes or saw marks of any kind and there is NO hand writing on the front or back of the jacket. It does have the remains of a price sticker at the top, front, right corner. See picture with this listing for more detail. 

The LP is in Near Mint minus condition! Considering the age of the record, the vinyl is in great condition - a better copy would be very difficult to locate. The LP does have some light superficial spider marks - these are caused by sliding the LP in and out of the paper record sleeve. The LP has NO significant spindle marks. The record retains much of it's original gloss and sheen. It is a lovely slab of super rare vinyl - in exceptional condition. When play graded on our audio system, the record performed very well, with only some very rare, light noise that did not detract from the performance in any way.A Short Note About LP GRADING -

• Mint = Only used for sealed items.
• Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
• Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
• Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
• Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.

Please understand that this is a vintage LP record - as such, one cannot expect the record to sound like a brand new, audiophile pressing! Some noise is inevitable - for best results, always properly clean your LPs before playing them.

The LP is an audiophile quality pressing (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
