Pierre Bachelet and Hervé Roy's score to the 1974 softcore smash Emmanuelle is both more sophisticated and more banal than your average stroke-film soundtrack. On the one hand, the composers strive for a complexity and intimacy largely absent from the genre. The electronic "Emmanuelle Swims" anticipates Brian Eno's ambient efforts in its icy simplicity, while "Mood" is as atmospheric as its title promises, employing synthesizers and acoustic guitar to create music that is the very essence of cinematic. But on the other hand, Emmanuelle is too cerebral and refined for its own good. Listeners anticipating the boom-chicka-bow-bow lunacy that makes '70s porn music so wonderful will be sorely disappointed by the relative absence of such debauchery.
