EMPTY VESSLES: My Son John/Low Toby (Metronome M 25.142, GERMANY 1969)

A German-only 45 by a British 60’s band whose whereabouts are still unknown to me. There was a group called the Empty Vessels that turned into Wishbone Ash in the early 70’s, but there seems to be no connection here. The A-side “My Son John” was a song written by Guy Fletcher and Doug Flett and had been previously recorded by U.K. group The Onyx in 1968. Far more interesting however is “Low Toby”, an original song (???) written by the trio “Parsons/Jenkins/Tosh” (does this ring a bell somewhere?) and a fab psych-influenced mod pop gem that recently was featured on “Incredible Sound Show Stories Vol. 16” (“Second Glance Through The Looking Glass”).

I just found out that these are indeed the Pre-WISHBONE ASH group featuring Martin & Glenn Turner (bass/gtr) & Steve Upton on drums. During the release of this, the band changed their name to TANGLEWOOD thus evolving into W.Ash. You can find the whole & a more in depth story with photos on the Electric Sound Show Vol.1 CD. Thanks to Greg at Dig The Fuzz for the info!

Strict grading. Record/sleeve = EX/VG++ (sobc).
