Background -

Spirit was an American rock band founded in 1967 and based in Los Angeles, California. Their most commercially successful single in the US was "I Got a Line on You", but they were also known for their albums including their self-titled debut album, The Family That Plays Together, Clear, and Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus.

The original lineup of the group evolved from an earlier Los Angeles band The Red Roosters, which included Randy California (guitars, vocals), Mark Andes (bass), and Jay Ferguson (vocals, percussion). With the addition of California's stepfather Ed Cassidy (drums) and keyboard player John Locke, the new band was originally named the Spirits Rebellious (after a book by Kahlil Gibran) but was soon shortened simply to Spirit. In 1966 California had also played with Jimi Hendrix (then known as Jimmy James) in his band, Jimmy James and the Blue Flames.

Cassidy was recognizable by his shaven head (hence his nickname "Mr. Skin", later the name of a Spirit song) and his fondness for wearing black. He was about twenty years older than the rest of the group (born in 1923). His earlier career was primarily in jazz and included stints with Cannonball Adderley, Gerry Mulligan, Roland Kirk, Thelonious Monk, and Lee Konitz. He was a founding member of Rising Sons with Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder.

Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus is the fourth album by the American psychedelic rock group Spirit. It was produced by David Briggs, who is best known for his work with Neil Young. The original LP was released in 1970 by Epic. It peaked at #63 on the Billboard 200 in February 1971—the band's lowest charting album to that point—and spent 14 weeks on the chart. However, with strong catalog sales it also became the band's only album to be certified Gold in the U.S., achieving that status in 1976.

"Nature's Way" became one of Spirit's signature songs, but was not a big hit at the time, peaking at #111 on the Billboard pop charts in 1971. In 1973, the B-side of "Nature's Way", "Mr. Skin", also charted, peaking at #92. Nick Tosches in Rolling Stone felt that despite some shortcomings the record was a "blockbuster". Appreciation of the album has grown among both old and new fans.

12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus, the last album from the original Spirit lineup, is to me one of the the greatest albums ever made. It's got everything- fantastic songs-great production-competent and inspired musicians! The sound is more psychedelic with guitars zooming between the speakers and a lot of backwards tapes. The songwriting is more consistenly mature than on the previous albums. The album was initially a failure commercially, and this sadly led to the group breaking up. Ed Cassidy said in the Time Circle booklet: "There was frustration (...) we had had what we thought was going to be successful, and I think everybody started to think, 'Maybe it's not working. Maybe it's time to move on.' This was sort of like 'The last hurrah', so to speak, and I think that's one of the reasons why it became a classic album. It was advanced for it's times, doing a lot of things electronically that were not being done, and the arranging of songs and how we had initiated the blending of one song into another." Q-magazine wrote: ".......songs full of drama, distinguished by heartbreaking shifts in rhythm and harmonics. Nature's Way is simply one of the most moving ecological pleas ever written (19 years ago!) and that follows his stirring prelude Nothin' to hide. Their musical discipline made Spirit the least obviously psychedelic of the West Coast bands (....) though Twelve dreams is certainly infused with many moments of heightened theatricality, of which the penultimate track, Morning Will Come, is a magificent hymn to hope, it's optimism emphasized by the huge arrangement." (Monty Smith, Q-magazine, July 1989). This album is a must-have for all Spirit-fans!

    CONDITION Details:

    The GATE FOLD LP jacket is in near mint minus condition! The jacket is tight and clean, with NO seam splits. The corners are solid, with just a bit of shelf wear the seams and corners. The back of the jacket has a small sticker on it, and a name written in ink. The dark mark you see on the front cover at the top, right corner is NOT a saw mark! It is a bit of grey paint, that is supposed to be there, from the manufacturer.  The colors on the jacket are sharp...just lovely (see pictures with this listing as they are of the actual item).

    The LP is in near mint minus condition! We found that the vinyl looked superb on this vintage LP. There are no significant marks and the LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen - obviously well taken care of! There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels either. Just beautiful USA made vinyl!

    A Short Note About LP GRADING -

    • Mint = Only used for sealed items.
    • Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
    • Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
    • Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
    • Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.

    For best results, always thoroughly clean your LPs before playing them.

    LPs can be audiophile quality pressings (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
