I did not think that Eric Burdon would be all that, but oh my god does he change War completely and it is not bad at all.

From House of the Rising Sun I would've expected Eric Burdon to be a whatever fine vocalist that was just used as an effective jumping point for War, but the amount of passion and soul that he has on this record makes me rethink everything, jumping from a good vocalist on a mediocre song to one of the most convincing R&B vocalists that I've ever heard. His super scratchy tone combined with his solid range really is just phenomenal, giving War a completely different sound that works as well as the one I would expect if not better.

From the instrumentals we get a new style as well, that being this really jam heavy sound that works really well for the bluesier soul funk that the group goes for, especially with the jazzier horns section and more prominent piano from Lonnie Jordan. B.B. Dickerson was also great, being one of my favorite members of War he's someone I'm always listening for, and even if I don't think he's as immediately groovy, he has this phenomenal style that builds up over the course of the album with great tone. Drums and guitar were also good, better than they were by the time of Eric Burdon's departure, but if I'm being honest the guitar is almost only rhythmic and the drumming is largely the same sound across one track.

The highlights were The Vision of Rassan and Tobacco Road, and while I liked Spill the Wine I don't think its up there with the best of this album or Black Man's Burdon. The album art is really cool, I love the marbled black border, I love the colors of the center image, and even if the image is a bit conceptually goofy I really do like it as the cover for the album that says "We the People, have declared War against the People, for the right to love each other". Overall, I liked this just as much as I hoped I would, and having already listened to it I know that Black Man's Burdon only gets better, Eric Burdon blew me away as a soul vocalist, and the rest of War was solid as a rock too.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)         Yellow Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 5 (back side).

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine and the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the spine and the opening side

-       Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the opening side (nothing significant) (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)
