Brief Info: Clapton’s second solo album after three years in the wilderness. Critically well-received and putting the guitar legend back on track, it sold well topping the American chard and peaking at No. 3 in the UK. Shorter songs and commercially pleasing on the ear, it remains one of his finest post-Cream albums. The title taken from the address he lived in whilst recording the album. This a lovely UK copy that appears hardly played, very well pressed with impressive clean sound, the only minor blemish, half a dozen faint ticks at the start of side two. The original first print cover is very nice as well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. This has the wide spine that includes the graphic – no gap on the building that flows around unbroken as seen. Printed and made in England by Robor, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: This cover has been cover-protected from new by one owner, both sides are as close to unworn as they are likely to get. A gentle hint of darkening, but barely creased or rubbed on these faces.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again, a hint of darkening, but no real wear as such.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with barely any rubbing or discolouration.

Bottom Edges: Similar to above with any traces of rubbing gentle, patchy and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge that is unworn. The back entrance edges are clean, mostly sharp with any thickening light as seen viewed end-on.

Spine and Text: This has the wider edge and with the continuous building graphic as-seen, these only on the first issues and harder to find. Solid, straight with no compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together. All text perfect and unworn, the surface with minimal discolouration or rubbing.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light with better than excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. With any hint of ageing gentle and light, this beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner with one crease and the paper mildly darkened. Two crisp unworn window circles and all edges naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better, one micro faint mark (had to use a magnifier to even seen it) emits six gentle light clicks at the start of side two, that apart, this is superb. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. Viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Clapton classic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault bar the ultra brief blemish at the start of side two which is light enough to register little. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any other surface sounds are minimal to none and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early UK pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled. Little of note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
