·       DIFFERENT COVER THAN THE OFFICIAL 1961 IMPULSE RELEASE (NOTE: IMPULSE TEST PRESSINGS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO DJ’S AND RADIO STATIONS IN “INVERTED & HALVED” COVERS; NAMELY, BECAUSE FRONT COVER PHOTO SLICKS FOR IMPULSE’S COVERS (WHICH WERE ALMOST ALWAYS GATEFOLD) WERE PRACTICALLY NEVER READY ON TIME TO MATCH THEM WITH TEST PRESSINGS, IMPULSE WOULD HAND OUT THEIR PROMOTIONAL AND TEST PRESSINGS IN TENTATIVE COVERS: IN OTHER WORDS, REGULAR LAMINATED IMPULSE GATEFOLD COVERS WOULD BE TURNED INSIDE OUT, THAN SPLIT IN HALF, THUS SHOWING THE INSIDE PHOTO ON THE OUTSIDE. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE RARE SPECIMENS.

Amazing !!! An unbelievable piece: What we have here is an unheard-of TEST PRESSING of this classic Jazz album – and with a different cover from the officially released version, no less!. While many test pressings often have alternate or demo- versions of known, later released songs, and while it is possible that this particular test pressing contains demo or alternate versions of some of the tracks, please don’t take our word that it does: unfortunately, we are not familiar with the entire album (we know only a few songs) and we regret we cannot provide any competent information on how different this TEST PRESSING may be from the official release. (a)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)            White Label Promo / Test Pressing version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 200:1.

(e)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has a small sticker with a filing code affixed to the spine

-         Cover has some small writing on both sides of the cover (minor annotation written in blue ballpoint pen)

-         Cover has a small stamp with a name and/or address of the previous owner on the back panel

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 6 and 8 inches /15 to 20 centimeters)

-         Cover has a sticker residue (partially peeled remnants of the price sticker or some other sticker; the buyer can probably remove these small, still affixed bits and pieces of the sticker with a minor effort)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-         No wrinkles or creases

-         No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-         No peel-off marks

-         No stains

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No water damage

-         No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
