There have been so few vinyl LPs produced over the last 5 years that you should never pass up the opportunity to upgrade your collection. To know Eric Dolphy, one need only to listen to him play "You Don't Know What Love Is" on Last Date. He treats his subject as a poet would, then as a philosopher, finally as a painter, and all the while singing like an angel through his music. As poet he textures phrase and meter to evoke high and inward emotion; as philosopher he restates the question--do you know love?--as painter he shows us nature's flora and fauna; and as an angel, his reed sings so sweetly that we can never forget. Listen and you will understand. Then there is such poignance because we know, perhaps he did too, that this was his Last Date. And he takes time to tell us the meaning of life and death. Eric's voice says, "When music is played, it floats in the air, never to be heard again." So after journeying through the attributes of love, Dolphy gives us a knowledge of truth. Each of us is like music. Our lives floating in air; our music stops; and our unique song ends. And so it was with the great Eric Dolphy.

IRON MAN - 1986 CELLULOID RECORDS RELEASE - There's not much I can add to the earlier reviews. This is top-drawer Dolphy with fine support, especially from Bobby Hutcherson, Woody Shaw and Richard Davis. Dolphy was one of the great individualists, and it's no wonder that Coltrane, Ornette and Mingus all saw fit to draw on his talents.

LIVE IN EUROPE - REMASTERED IN 1989 BY PHIL DE LANCIE - This album was recorded live in Copenhagen in 1961. Hi Fly is a 13-minute duet with Eric on flute and Chuck Israels on bass. It has great consistency, considering the sparse lineup. The version of God Bless the Child here is Eric on solo bass clarinet, and I think it's generally considered to be his best recorded version (also check out Here & There, and The Illinois Concert for other versions). The other two album cuts are featuring 3 Danish musicians. They're not totally on Eric's wavelength on Glad to be Unhappy (flute)-- but Oleo is more in the hard bop vein they're used to, and it really cooks with eric on bass clarinet! Great album for any Dolphy fan, because those are his best live recordings

AT THE FIVE SPOT - 1986 FANTASY RECORDS RELEASE - Featuring Eric Dolphy (alto sax, bass clarinet, flute), Booker Little (trumpet) Mal Waldron (piano), Richard Davis (bass), and Ed Blackwell (drums). Includes remastered audio, original liner notes by Robert Levin and new liners by Neil Tesser.

In mid-July of 1961, the New York Times reported that the city-home of the Five Spot, where this short-lived quintet played its one and only engagement-was experiencing warmer than usual temperatures. Pianos hate extremes of temperature. In addition, heavy rainstorms had pummeled the metropolitan area the day before this recording, with clouds and scattered storms continuing the next few days; we can guess that the humidity played its part in sapping the piano strings of their necessary tension. Whatever the reason, Mal Waldron found himself playing what may be the most ferociously, obtrusively, and at times comically out-of-tune piano on any major jazz recording of the last 60 years.

Over the years, as history has increasingly lionized these performances, the problem of the piano has grown proportionally. Less than three months after the Five Spot date, trumpeter Booker Little died: the first among equals in this band, he shared with Eric Dolphy an encyclopedic command of form and technique, and a commitment to shared musical ideals. Little's death placed the heavy stamp of mortality on this one-and-only collaboration between musical soulmates, marred as it was by the piano clinkers. Less than three years after that, Dolphy himself was dead, predictably raising the stakes on any music he had recorded, let alone a once-in-his-lifetime quintet-and further raising the hackles of those who bemoaned the interruptive intonation by the hapless piano.

That night at the Five Spot, the Dolphy-Little quintet recorded ten tunes. Four of them (including one alternate take) appeared on the New Jazz label as Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot.

Aggression is 16 minutes long and has great soloing from everyone. Richard Davis' walking bass solo is so fast it's amazing. Like Someone in Love is nearly 20 minutes long and some of the most expressive jazz I've heard. Eric's flute is contrasted beautifully with Booker's trumpet. Only two songs, you say? Yeah, but each song is an improvised symphony in terms of emotional content. Get this ALBUM and feel the music!

OUTWARD BOUND - 1982 FANTASY RECORDS RELEASE -  Dolphy had left his native California and come east as part of Chico Hamilton's group, settling in New York in 1960 and becoming part of Charles Mingus's group. This first recording as a leader brought comparisons with Ornette Coleman but the two were really parallel figures in the then-emerging avant-garde. Dolphy did not eschew "changes," as Coleman did, but he used them in new ways. This LP was significant not only for his alto saxophone but introduced his individual approach to the flute and, particularly, the bass clarinet.

LOOKING AHEAD - 1986 FANTASY RECORDS RELEASE -  We have here a meeting of two great multi-instrumentalists, Eric Dolphy and Ken McIntyre. Dolphy is of course the one we all know and love and for everyone who loves him, this is a classic, quite little known but fantastic session well worth picking up. And he is in great, cutting form as usual, mostly on alto (3 tracks) and flute (2) and bass clarinet (1).

Ken McIntyre is more of an unknown. Also a giant multi-instrumentalist, McIntyre plays only alto sax and flute here, but later on would pick up the bass clarinet, oboe, and bassoon. His solos graced Cecil Taylor's brilliant, Unit Structures some years later. To his credit here, he sounds nothing like Dolphy though! You know, sometimes on Johnny Griffin's A Blowing Session, it's hard to distinguish between Griffin and Trane (and sometimes even Mobley! ) But not here... these two are very different, and together they sound great on the ensemble sections.

Five of the six songs are McIntyre originals. Most of them are nice, and surprisingly quirky and memorable. They're all medium to fast tempo, with a nice light swing thanks to the top rhythm section of Walter Bishop (piano), Sam Jones (bass) and Art Taylor (drums). and of course Dolphy and McIntyre just cut things up!

McIntyre is slower, dryer, and more careful that Dolphy who spins and jumps all over with his unique, loopy, bee-buzzing-in-a-jar style. But, McIntyre does some interesting things, and takes some tricky chances. One shouldn't downplay his contribution to this disk at all. Check out his solo on the last song, Dianna. His playing is gritty and experimental before giving way to Dolphy who rolls and sings notes on the flute.

Overall, it's a great album. McIntyre is a very underrecorded voice so this album is somewhat essential. He sounds fresh and different throughout. And for Dolphy fans, this is of course essential. It's a good find.
