extremely rare 1961 session with the Latin Jazz Quintet, with a slightly different lineup than the LP released on Prestige . The music here being without a doubt more lively and inventive than on the session from 1960 (caribe). There is something utterly unique about this recording among all the others in Dolphy's discography.  Of course Dolphy is an utterly unique musician, and in this setting, it might seem at first like a joke (listen to Cha Cha King or I Got Rhythm - unbelievable!), but somehow he manages in the humblest way to make it through the cute and sometimes stiff arrangements and when time comes for his solo, he bursts free and transforms novelty into sheer, uncompromising beauty. He turns what would have been a fairly pedestrian, dated album into a true work of art. And don't get me wrong, the band is not at all bad, in fact quite good, but keep in mind that this is 1961, when he was playing with the likes of  Coltrane, Mal Waldron and Ron Carter, had already released several albums as a leader, and had been playing regularly with Charles Mingus and had recorded with Ornette Coleman the year before. This record gives a rare perspective of the brilliance and relentlessness of Dolphy's quest to find new sounds and approaches to music, whatever the context...
