ERKIN KORAY – Elektronik Türküler.  Pharaway Records PHS-007, a division of Guerssen Records. Spainish release. FACTORY SEALED NEW VINYL RECORD ALBUM. Originally issued in 1974 on the Dogan Plakcilik label. This edition issued in 2012. Comes in a heavy 350g gatefold jacket. TRACKS:  Karli Da?lar, Sir, Hele Yar, Korkulu Rüya, Yalnizlar Rihtimi, Cemalim, Inat, and Türkü. DESCRIPTION:  Technically his second LP after a collection of singles, this benchmark record from 1974 taught Istanbul’s musicians and pop fans how to put Turkish folk songs from the 17th century together with meaty, thundering guitar solos. With a crack bass player by his side (Ahmet Güvenç from Bunalim and Baris Manco’s Kurtalan Ekspres) and an electrified ba?lama in his hands, Erkin Koray lets his gloomy baritone voice float over wiry double-reed melodies, bulging riffs, & hammer-ons that go on for-friggin-ever. Savagery begins at home people, so make sure you get a physical copy of the best record by the Turkish Hendrix into your house." Of course, we've offered versions of this album for years... here is what we had to say:  terrific heavy Eastern raves and drones from Turkey's legendary freaked-out psychedelic guitar guru; fantastic sound quality on an album that basically collected some of Koray's best singles tracks up to the date of its original release by Dogan Plakcilik in 1974—the result? some of Koray's most extended tracks. The sound that first emerges as Elektronik Türküler begins is that of the plucked strings of the baglama, a sound both sensuous and languid; then comes another undulating rhythm, Koray’s instrumental, Sir (Secret), with his lead baglama book-ending a stinging psychedelic guitar solo. The mood changes with the next track, Hele Yar, an acoustic re-arrangement of a Turkish ballad from the 17th Century; here, twin baglamas construct a dance rhythm behind lilting bass and scant drums. Side two of the original LP opens with the acoustic guitar-led love ballad, Cemalim (My Cemal); this well known Anatolian folk number is well handled here with Koray’s stridently strummed acoustic guitar battling throughout against overdubbed electric guitar—background vocals waft softly in the background, echoing Koray’s hypnotic repetition of the title, accompanied by highly controlled fuzz guitar filigrees. The last track is the nine-minute odyssey that is Türkü (Ballad): the swirling kalem, that Turkish double-reed wind instrument of snake charming tendencies, weaves a truly psychedelic arabesque against a foundation of solid bass and drums; the voice of Koray emerges from the shadows drenched in reverb, slowly reciting words of great import, intoned over and over again as if in consecration of a ceremonial rite; the pace quickens to a Dervish whirl, until a smash of glass breaks the tension... and we begin again, with Koray’s guitar and trance-like recitation carrying us further and further back into time, each word fading farther and farther into ancestral echo-land where east is west and west is east... and we are all together. A densely textured psychedelic masterpiece; mesmerizing. Heavy 350g gatefold cover, 180g vinyl, insert with liner notes. This is the album that opened the door to the Turkish rock scene for me.

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers.

RETURN POLICY:

Please e-mail me with specific details and I will get back to you with your options. I ask that if there is a problem with the item that you contact me as soon as possible after receiving it. Any item that must be returned is done so at the buyer’s expense; damage and defective returns will be re-embursed upon receipt of the return item. Any refund, exchange, or substitution/credit will be at the buyer’s choice, but not made until the original item is received back by me; in the condition as stated in the item description. 

NON-ARRIVAL OF PACKAGES:

US Customers:  Please wait at least two weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. All packages are shipped with confirmation/tracking, you will received an automatically generated shipping notice from Ebay with your tracking number. It is rare that I’ve had a package not make its US destination, so risk is minimal. The most often cuase of delayed receipt of a package in the US is due to the tracking number of the package not being scanned in at its point of origin (it gets tossed in with regular first class mail), or, less often, at some point along its transit route.

INTERNATIONAL Customers:  Please wait at least 3 weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. If security is your concern please have your package registered. I do my best to quickly post packages, but once the package is in the hands of the world’s postal system it is beyond my control. With First-Class Package International Service my only option for investigating the loss of your package is to verify that it left this country to its destination country. Once in the destination country any inquiry on a package must be made by the receiving customer. Most all delayed/lost packages have disappeared/been delayed after they have reached their destination country.
