Description
The Essential Doc Watson 2 Disc Gatefold Album 1973 Vanguard VSD45/46
This record is in VG+M- condition. The cover is VG+.
This album is the original issue of this recording by Vanguard (1973). It consists of two records; later Vanguard would issue each separately. Record 1 is a compilation from Vanguard's early releases of Watson; record 2 is a compilation of live recordings made at the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 and 1964.
These two records illustrate Doc Watson's virtuosity as well as his versatility. He was unrivaled on the guitar, and he had wide-ranging interests and appreciation of various styles and genres of music. He enjoyed playing with others and has a good number of talented musicians accompanying him on these cuts (among them his mother and his son).
Blind since a small boy, his contact with audiences was nevertheless powerful. One can hear that in the second record's live performances at Newport.
Doc Watson had a remarkable ear and memory for auditory information. I met him several times at small social singing events, years apart. After our first conversation, he never failed to call me out by name when he heard my voice, even years later.
Watson died in 2012; he was in his eighty's. His son, Merl, who often played with Doc (as he does on this album) died in 1985. Doc's mother passed away in 1985. She accompanied him to the Newport Festival in 1964, and also sings with Doc on this record 2 (Mrs. G. D. Watson).
Doc was quality material to record. The producer of this album, Ralph Rinzler, was himself a folk musician (The Greenbriar Boys). Rinzler worked at the Library of Congress Archives of Traditional Music and had heard many guitar players. He chose to record & produce Doc
