I am going to be making notes here as I listen through both sides. I aim to be as accurate as possible. Focusing mostly on sounds that are not supposed to be there. 

SIDE A

Right, I have my cup of tea prepared, the wind and snow are blowing outside and I know this iconic album is going to bring some warmth to this day. So, let us go.

I am listening to this through headphones, volume quite high. Ok well as expected there is a bit of crackle in the lead in wax. The first thing you will notice about this pressing is how big some of the tracks sound. This one Out on weekend, have a lovely full sound, especially the bass, which is booming. Now there is crackle in the background throughout. No repeating clicks, just a dusty background. No breaking up of the sound quality, nice clear frequencies. Bit of the old crackle between tracks. It continues into the next track; which is the title track Harvest. Again the bass is booming. I've never really liked this track, I know it is some folks favourite. I like his acoustic work, but much prefer the heavier tracks on this album. Some great engineering on this album. The vocals sound really great. I wonder what kind of mic he used. That track sounded good, but there was low crackle. The heavier I set the stylus the less crackle I get. You feel like you are inside the piano during A man needs a maid. Did somebody or a string section, they are here. They are bit dramatic, don't think I would want a dramatic maid. A monster of a track. Ah, Heart of gold kicks off loud, and really warm. The crackle is way in the background now, which is good. This is one of the first songs I got into as a kid. The production / engineering on this actually sounds like it goes off the rails during the first harmonica solo, not something I have noticed before, quite cool. Are you ready for the country is our outro track. The production of this track sounds different to tracks one and two. Probably another session, mic arrangement / type. Might be something to do with the steel guitar in the mix. Oh, there was some crackle but I stopped really noticing it. A good sounding side, no repeating clicks or ticks. No stylus jumps or scuffs. Crackle was present throughout, never more than a moderate level. I do think a deep clean would improve, but not eradicate this issue.

SIDE B

Okie dokie. Another one of my all-time favourites Old man. I got into this as a kid, now I am the old man , hahaha. Big, warm sound. Some crackle in the back. Tracks is sounding good, no loss of quality on the high notes in the chorus, all really tight. The bass on this album has been captured perfectly; very full and clear no distortion. Oh no it is the string section again. Not my cup of tea, too grandiose; it is more akin to a Michael Jackson MTV performance. The crackle is more pronounce in this track. Still, things hold together sonically when you get the big string burst at the end. Here we go, a bit of classic Neil rocking out. Boom! I love how this track builds and punches you a bit harder a step at a time before repeating. No distortion to top frequencies, only the good type of distortion here. The guitar jumps out during its short solo. The harmonies are all sounding clear. The crackle is here, but I don't care. Boom! The choruses are awesome. Up next a close mic acoustic guitar is strumming and picking a wistful tune. Perhaps the most delicate sounding track and where you do here crackle more of course. However the recording is far from delicate, very close mic, and loud. Even the audience is happy. Last up is Words, another grungy number for the road. Now this sounds more like Are you ready for the country in terms of the production sound, maybe they were done at the same session. Despite the crackle I can still easily  make out instruments that are in back of the mix. The rhythm guitar sounding like a brick wall. You can make out the cymbals which have been mixed down low, pretty cool.

So an enjoyable listen. No skipping, or popping. Like the other side a persistent crackle can be heard throughout at varying levels. Never so much as to put me off. The over sound quality outside of that is of a high standard. No sign of overplaying, no lose in quality of the recorded frequencies; a testament to the quality of older vinyl compared to new. Listenable but not perfect.

Final thoughts

This is a decent playing copy with a very presentable sleeve. This pressing is nearly 50 years old but it has stood up well to time. You may be able to rid yourself of some of the crackle with a deep clean as it is a dusty. A classic album that was a joy to listen to for you here.
