Background -

Viktor Aleksandrovi? Pikaisen (Russian: ?????? ????????????? ????????) was born into a family of musicians: his mother is a pianist and his father is a violinist in the Kiev Opera Orchestra. Little Viktor began studying the violin at the age of four under the guidance of his father and two years later entered the Kiev Conservatory's music school in the class of Joseph Gutman, a well-known teacher of young violinists.

After the outbreak of the Second World War, the family moved to Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, and at the age of nine Viktor made his debut in the Concerto n. 2 by Wieniawski with the Alma-Ata Symphony Orchestra. In the meantime, he continued violin lessons with his father. In 1944 Pikaisen is heard by David Ojstrach. After moving to Moscow, in 1946 Ojstrach accepted him as his pupil (first at the Gnessin Music School and then at the Conservatory). Viktor Pikaisen graduated in 1957 and continued his post-diploma studies with Ojstrach at the same conservatory until 1960.

For over a decade he took part in international competitions: in 1949 he won the second prize of the Jan Kubelik Competition in Prague; in 1955 the 5th prize of the Concours Reine Élisabeth of Brussels; in 1957 the 2nd prize of the Concours international Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud in Paris; in 1958 the 2nd prize of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition; and finally in 1965 the 1st prize of the international violin competition Niccolò Paganini of Genoa.

After making his debut as a soloist in 1960 with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, he began an international career. Since the late 1960s he has been one of the few violinists to perform the full execution of Paganini's 24 Capricci in public. In 1967 he recorded them in full for La Melodija and Le Chant du Monde.

In addition to classical concerts, his repertoire includes works by 20th century authors. Part of his repertoire is dedicated to predominantly Russian-Soviet contemporary music and is the dedicatee of several compositions by Boris Tchaikovsky (1925-1996). From 1966 to 1986 Victor Pikaisen taught at the Moscow Conservatory. Since 1993 he has been a professor of the State Conservatory in Ankara (Turkey), as well as the Moscow Schnittke Institute and the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory. He makes many recordings, some with David Ojstrach as director and is also active as a jury member in several international competitions.

CONDITION Details:

The individual LP jackets are in excellent overall condition. The jackets are very fragile as they used very light cardboard. Regardless, they are tight and clean, with NO seam splits. The colors on the jacket are sharp and clean with just some shelf wear evident along the seams and corners, with a small date written in ink at the top, front, right corner of each LP jacket.

The LPs are in near mint minus overall condition! There are no serious marks on the vinyl. There may be some light spider marks on the vinyl which are caused by sliding LPs in and out of the inner sleeve. Most of the time, these types of marks are not audible, but it really depends on the sensitivity of your audio gear. Considering the vintage of this LP, the vinyl looks absolutely terrific! They may have some dust and finger prints, no major issues to note. However, this is not a new audiophile LP....some extraneous sound is inevitable and should be expected for vintage LPs. This vinyl retains much of the original gloss and sheen! There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels either.

A Short Note About LP GRADING -

• Mint = Only used for sealed items.
• Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
• Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
• Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
• Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.

For best results, always thoroughly clean your LPs before playing them.

LPs can be audiophile quality pressings (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
