Description

​Surface: A very strong copy of a 105-year-old Black Swan. It retains much more luster than usually seen on this label. There are some visible light surface scratches and "wispy" scuffs (visible in Photo 2).
​Specific Note: I have tested a few areas with a soft touch and these marks appear superficial and non-feelable. There is a slight amount of "mottling" in the shellac finish (typical for Black Swan’s early pressing material) which may cause the characteristic period-correct background hiss, but the music remains prominent.
​Labels: Clean and vibrant. The iconic Black Swan logo is fully intact with no major rubbing or ink loss.
Recorded on March 22, 1921, this was Ethel Waters’ debut for Black Swan Records. At the time, the label was struggling, but this single release changed everything:
​"Down Home Blues" backed with "Oh Daddy" sold an incredible 500,000 copies in its first six months.
​Waters was backed by Cordy Williams' Jazz Masters, featuring a young Fletcher Henderson on piano. Henderson would go on to become one of the most important bandleaders in jazz history.
​This record made Ethel Waters the highest-paid Black recording artist of her time and effectively launched her legendary career.
