Below is a biography of Eugen D’Albert .

The German composer Eugen d'Albert was born in Glasgow and had his early musical training in London, where his father had formerly been ballet-master at the King's Theatre and at Covent Garden. He enjoyed a career as a virtuoso pianist, later turning his attention to opera, a form in which he won immediate, if ephemeral success. He died in Riga in 1932. The best known of d'Albert's stage works is his music-drama Tiefland, based on a Portuguese original and first staged in Prague in 1903. This was followed by a musical comedy on the subject of the flautist king Frederick the Great, Flauto solo. His final work for the stage, Mister Wu, was left unfinished at his death. D'Albert left two piano concertos, a cello concerto and a symphony. Better known is his Symphonic Prelude to Tiefland. D'Albert made the usual transcriptions and arrangements for piano, expected of any virtuoso. Original compositions include a Suite, Op.1, a Sonata and a large number of shorter genre pieces. Eugen d'Albert was a celebrated pianist (pupil of Sullivan and Pauer in London, later a student in Liszt's masterclass) and a friend of numerous famous composers, artists and poets * Though born in Glasgow, he always considered himself German * He increasingly shifted his work from performing to composing, above of all songs (58 with piano accompaniment) and operas (21 composed between 1893 and 1932), though his worklist also contains two piano concertos and a symphony * Enjoyed early successes with the tragic one-act opera Kain (Cain), Tiefland (The Lowlands, one of the rare German verismo operas, though based on a Portuguese original) and Die Toten Augen (The Dead Eyes) * His operas display a Romantic variety of styles and have fascinated audiences through their immediate dramatic effects * Most of his later operas are comic, such as Flauto solo, an opera on the flautist king Frederick the Great ******** Eugen Francis Charles d'Albert (April 10, 1864 Glasgow - March 3, 1932 Riga) was a pianist and composer of Scottish birth who lived primarily in Germany.D'Albert was born in Glasgow to an English mother and a French/Italian father, Charles d'Albert, a composer of ballet music who had formerly been ballet-master at the King's Theatre and at Covent Garden. Eugen d'Albert never spoke English fluently, and considered himself to be German. A self-taught musician, d'Albert won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London and moved to Vienna as a youth. He was a pupil of the elderly Franz Liszt, and can be heard in an early recording of that composer's works. His output includes a symphony, two string quartets, two piano concertos, a cello concerto, and many lieder and piano works. His greatest compositional successes, however, were his many operas - though these have not maintained a place in the repertoire. D'Albert was married six times, one of his wives being the Venezuelan pianist/singer/composer Teresa Carreño.
