Eagles. ON THE BORDER (Asylum 1004 – 1974). NEAR MINT LP in its ORIGINAL SHRINK WRAP (just a little bit of a blemish on the Side 1 vinyl, otherwise fine). It’s difficult for us here at Late Blue Highway to choose our favorite Eagles LP, so we won’t! However, everything about these songs hinted at incredible chart success just around the bend. Don’t you just long for the day when the opening tracks to each side set up what was to come? This one roars to a start with “Already Gone” and then Side 2 opens with their homage to James Dean. Throw in the sensitive soulful tracks on each side (“Ol ‘55” and “My Man”) and they were tough to top, in any decade. Most noteworthy was On the Border produced the band’s first #1 single, the classic blend of Henley and Frey with a dash of one of our other favorite songwriters J.D. Souther, “The Best of My Love.” Four others #1 hits would shortly follow. Can you name them all? And no, “Lyin’ Eyes” peaked at #2!
