"Earth – Radio/Live LP - In the interest of documenting exceptional and vibrant live performances by our artists, we are proud to present a exclusive, vinyl only live album from Earth. Comprised of two tracks from a live radio broadcast on KFJC (New Years Eve 2007) and two track from a live performance in Vienna on there 2008 European tour. Of particular note is that Trey Spruance (Secret Chief 3, Faxed Head) plays Baritone Guitar and sitar on the KFJC recordings. The sound quality is incredible and crystal clear! Randall Dunn (sunn 0))) , Boris, Kinski) was the live sound engineer and the recordings were ultimately mastered by Mell Dettmer. The 180 gram black vinyl comes housed in a beautiful cloth-like textured heavy-weight cardboard sleeve with metallic silver foil printing! This release is limited to 3,000 copies and as with all Southern Lord vinyl it is highly collectible and they will go fast!"

"People often call their Hex onwards material a kind of Country Doom.  I can see where they get that from, and in my imagination I can imagine this music being a melancholic jig for giants, but if you sped it up I imagine it would sound more like AC/DC, or ZZ Top, or Warren Zevon even… okay, so maybe it is some kind of country for the river Styx.  Who cares?  It’s Earth, and even though I first heard them just 18 months ago they have a very special place in my world.

The comparatively uplifting title track sounds better somehow, Trey Spruance’s sitar playing comes to the fore, injecting it with light and vigour.

Randall Dunn’s production of the studio record really was some nimble knob twiddling. This record sounds great, but the fact that Dunn (and the band) didn’t just take the easy route and make Bees sound like a live record is in retrospect a worthwhile move, and not just because it leaves open the tenuous opportunity to release a live record entirely featuring songs from said record. I just found out that Randall Dunn was the live engineer at these shows. Makes Sense.

Some differences seem to be: A spoken intro and some additional string bending dissonance on ‘The Driver’. Drums that sound way more reverby.  Less piano.  No Bill Frisell on ‘The Driver’, ‘Carrion Crow’ and ‘Engine of Ruin’. Consequently they sound sparser and in some cases require a little more deliberate focussing of the attention.  General incidental guitar noises, string scratches and the hum and crackle of amps.

And ‘Junkyard Priest’, where Carlson (presumably) tells the audience that this will be the extra track on the vinyl release of Bees, encouraging the tapers to get taping. If you missed out on the vinyl edition of Bees (like me), and you weren’t taping at that show, here’s reason number one. It’s a good track, and fits with the contemporary material. The vital addition of warm blusters of trombone makes it a lazy swoon; without them it would be just another Carlson riff, the colour of the brass lays a wry smile on the face of their Junkyard Priest.

Having spent a while with this record, my interest in recent Earth recordings has been re-invigorated.  however well the band played at these shows and however well captured they were, I prefer them for their immediacy, for the lower levels of reverb, for the clean synthetic sound of the keyboards ..."
