THIS IS THE ORIGINAL U.S. MONO FIRST PRESSING FROM 1961 of "The Tenor Scene" by The Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis & Johnny Griffin Quintet on Presige Records.

***This is an ULTRA RARE preview/promotional release (for DJ's, Music Critics, Industry reps, etc.) with the original Prestige Records hole punched through both the jacket and the vinyl. One punch did both holes, they line up perfectly. Very rare find. (see pictures)

THIS RECORD IS FROM OUR PERSONAL COLLECTION. Well maintained. Very Rare.

*Because our clients are mostly jazz collectors and connoisseurs, as we are, we made it our policy to only sell vinyl that we grade in VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+) condition or better. This vinyl is in our opinion a Near Mint but we do not like to grade that high as some people are very picky. It looks and plays great so VG++ is as high as we ever go. It is one of our cleanest records.

Record Grade VG++ = Very well maintained. The vinyl is in beautiful condition. The vinyl is stunning. Looks barely played. Just listened to both sides of the whole album with headphones on and it plays very smooth. Amazing condition and quality. Shiny vinyl. Difficult to find this rare vintage record in such great condition. It is actually a Near mint vinyl but we never grade that high. (see pictures) 

Jacket Grade VG+ = Shiny, clean, well maintained. No staining. No writing. No Tape. Very shiny and glossy. Has been kept in plastic.  Normal corner dents from use. Two stamps on rear of jacket, "Inspected by No. 2" and a letter "E". Hole punch left of center. A very clean jacket for a 54 year old album. (see pictures)

Prestige Records, founded in 1948 by Bob Weinstock, began in New York at 446 West 50th Street. In the early years, Weinstock used a variety of recording studios around the city - Nola Studios, Beltone Studios, among others. In the 1950s, most of the recordings were made by Rudy van Gelder in his home studios in Hackensack, NJ. When Van Gelder moved to Englewood Cliffs in July 1959, Weinstock continued to use the studio. In 1957/1958, he moved the Prestige office to nearby Bergenfield, NJ, at 203 South Washington Avenue, and the address listed on the yellow-and-black label was changed.

During the two-year existence of their quintet, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (a Prestige artist) and Johnny Griffin (under contract to Riverside/Jazzland) satisfied their contractual obligations by recording five albums for each company. This was the pair's first for Prestige, taped over the course of an extremely productive evening at the legendary Minton's Playhouse in Harlem.
