Collectors, here is a great disc, Edison Diamond Disc 52523, circa spring 1929 (songs recorded on February 5, 1929). The sound has a real "presence" to it, I believe these two songs were electrical recordings. Frankie Marvin sings two of his own compositions, with fiddle and guitar: "Riding on the Elevated Railroad " and (label missing) "My Mammy's Yodel Song". Nicely performed hillbilly music, Mr. Marvin is a decent yodeler, both songs have clever lyrics. "Railroad" was issued as Edison Blue Amberol cylinder #5692. The record plays well with little surface noise, sounds great! The record has minor edge chips, and the label still there is glued tightly to the record.
Frankie (1904 -1985) and his (better known) brother Johhny Marvin were born on an Oklahoma ranch. Johnny started singing and recording songs first. Frankie learned his brother's music, talked him into going to New York, where the two of them wrote songs and made records. They also had some success in vaudeville. Frankie later played steel guitar in Gene Autry's band.
Spring 1929 is at the end of Diamond Disc Land, the highest record number issued was #52651 (highest issued cylinder was #5719). The disc business was pretty much done by late summer 1929, although Edison as a business did not close until October 31, 1929. These late records were issued in very small quantities. The consumer had only a few months to buy this record. As to what happened to inventories of dealers and jobbers after fall 1929, who knows!! So, this is super rare, if this is what you like and need, do not pass it up, you might not see another up for sale for a while. Low buy it now price given what I got here, go for it!
