Collectors, here is a super rare disc, Edison (Electric) Diamond Disc 52493, from January-February 1929. Two songs sung by popular tenor Walter van Brunt, using the pseudonym "Walter Scanlan": "Pretty Little Curls" and "Sally of My Dreams", with orchestra. These are fairly sentimental numbers, although "Sally" has a nice jazz saxophone interlude. The record plays loud and very well with minimal surface noise. As far as I can tell, "Pretty Little Curls" was not issued on a cylinder. "Sally of My Dreams" was issued as cylinder #5658.
As you might know, Edison stopped issuing Diamond Discs in mid 1929, did some experimenting with "needle cut" records compatible with Victor and the rest of the world, and then went out of business. The highest number disc record is 52651, and the highest number cylinder record issued for sale was 5719. So, this record is REALLY near the end. Customers/retailers had only a few months to obtain this record. The system went obsolete, and within a few years most diamond disc machines and records ended up in the attic/basement/dumpster. I would assume actual production of this record, like its cylinder counterpart, was limited to a few thousand (hundred?) copies. How many are around 91 years later? We don't know, but the answer surely is "not many"! If this is what you like and need, do not pass it up, you could be waiting a long time (forever?) before another is available for sale. Realistic starting bid given what I have here, come join the fun!!
