Description
These eight privately pressed 78 RPM acetate records were all found together and seem to be related, so we're selling them as a lot, but I'll describe them for you one by one so you can see the differences between them, as well as what they have in common. Starting with the smallest ones and working up, they are shown in the pictures in the following order:
1) Voice-o-Graph Recording Disc, 6" diameter, recorded only on one side, with the handwritten title on the label: "Summer of 1946. Capital Station, New York." The content is a personal message, but the sender and intended recipient are not identified. The speaker, however, is a woman who says she is at Capital Station, New York, with Jody McKenzie and Margaret McLean, and that they have just eaten at the new Hotel Victoria, and they are about to take a bus to Washington, DC.
2) Voice-o-Graph Recording Disc, 6" diameter, recorded only on one side, with the handwritten title on the label: "Rocky Point, Rhode Island, August 28th (year not stated) - Ann Craig and Joan O'Sullivan." The content is an unaccompanied female duet of the song "Baby Face."
3) Audiodisc, 8" diameter, recorded only on one side, with the label datestamped July 13, 1948, and an ownership sticker giving the name and Boston address of Herbert S. Spitz. The content is part of a Yankee Network radio quiz show sponsored by Boston Gas and recorded in Boston and titled "Quizzing the Wives." The contestant being recorded is identified as Mary O'Sullivan, a member of a local Circle of the Daughters of Isabella (a Catholic charitable organization). The name of the Circle is stated, but the only word I can hear for sure is "Monsignor."
4) Duodisc, 8" diameter, recorded on both sides, with both sides dated November 20, 1948. One side contains the song "A Tree in the Meadow", a male voice and piano, and the handwritten note on the label says "A Tree in the Meadow by Bob Legg. Poor tree, Sandy killed the tree" (Sandy is identified on the record as a dog). Side Two is titled "Station blab by Lee, Bill, Olga and Bob." It contains greetings addressed to someone named Dottie, and two of the speakers identify themselves as "Dad" and "Olga" respectively.
5) Recoton, 8" diameter, recorded on both sides. Both sides contain dialog or banter with a heavy New England accent, but the poor quality of the recording makes a lot of it unintelligible, so I'll just tell you what's written on the labels. One side says "Cabin in the Pines - Bob Legg, Lee, Bob." The other side is labeled "Looking for a Job - Bob, Lee, Tim Stanton, Sandy (dog)", with "Bob Legg" crossed out.
6) Audiodisc, 10" diameter, recorded only on one side, with the label datestamped August 16, 1949, and the same ownership sticker of Herbert S. Spitz. The content is Mary O'Sullivan taking part in another episode of "Quizzing the Wives." This time, however, she is identified as living in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and being the Regent of the Daughters of Isabella Circle. The label inscription reads: " Nana Mary O'Sullivan, D of I. Don McNeil."
7) Recoton, 10" diameter, recorded on both sides. One side is labeled "Bing Crosby - September Song - Recitation 9/3." The content does indeed start out with Bing Crosby singing "September Song", but it is very poor quality and breaks up in the middle. It is followed by two spoken word passages that are incomplete. The other side - labeled "Radio Program" - contains a two-person dialogue consisting of questions and answers.
8) Recoton, 10" diameter, with both sides containing risque party songs sung in a male voice with piano accompaniment. One side is labeled "Every Girl I've Ever Known Has Had One", and the other side, "I'd Love to Nibble on Her Cupcakes." The latter has serious surface issues, including a blank unrecorded section in the middle of the music.
They all have playback issues, as is fairly typical with these hand-made recordings, so you might want to lower your expectations. In addition to parts being inaudible or unintelligible, there will be a lot of background crackle, frequent needle jumps, and, occasionally, a couple of spots where the needle sticks and you'll have to physically lift it and move it over. The technical quality of the recordings is also very amateur, with voices sometimes fading into inaudibility, and some of the sides ending mid-song or mid-speech.
Also included are the sleeves and envelopes they were found with, which include the 6" Voice-o-Graph mailing envelope (pictures 2 and 3), and the very torn up sleeve or envelope with the letterhead of H. Royer Smith Co., "The World's Record Shop", of Philadelphia (pictures 6 and 7).
