Baron Elmo proudly presents a superb vinyl document for those with a deep and abiding love of the drone, served up by two very different masters of the genre, ELEH and PAULINE OLIVEROS: The Beauty of the Steel Skeleton / Drifting Depths, a split LP issued in 2008 by the Important label in a hand-numbered edition of 760 copies. A central figure in post-war electronic art music, Pauline Oliveros is one of the original members of the San Francisco Tape Music Center (along with Morton Subotnick, Ramon Sender, Terry Riley, and Anthony Martin), the resource on the U.S. west coast for electronic music during the Sixties. The Center later moved to Mills College, where she was its first director, and is now called the Center for Contemporary Music. She pioneered the technique of Deep Listening (recordings made in resonant or reverberant spaces such as caves, cathedrals and huge underground cisterns), and designed the Expanded Instrument System, an electronic signal processing system that she deploys in her performances and on recordings. Pauline created a new work exclusively for this release, “Drifting Depths,” an improvised piece played on a harmonica, then processed through Pauline's Expanded Instrument System. Eleh was formed to specifically to pay tribute to early experimental minimalist pioneers such as Oliveros, as well as La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Eliane Radigue and Charlemagne Palestine. Using an enormous vintage modular analog synthesizer, a battery of HP tube test oscillators and occasional guitar and piano, Eleh creates highly minimal and deeply spiritual pure analog drone music with emphasis on the physical ultra-low end. Incorporating tones as low as .05 hz (well below the range of human hearing). Eleh is as much of a physical experience as it is an audio one. Their side of this LP, also exclusive, is “The Beauty of the Steel Skeleton,” a glacier-slow melodic drone that was created as a tool for meditation. To be heard / felt correctly, the listener must sit with ears at speaker height at least 7 feet away. Increased volume reveals detail. This is a vinyl-only release, packed inside a handmade and hand-assembled letter-pressed jacket. The first 200 copies were packaged with copper colored jackets, while the remaining 560 copies had the art and lettering done in silver. Numbered #201, this copy is the first of the silver batch. Both the record and cover are in pristine, near-mint condition; the album was purchased new by Baron Elmo and treated with tender loving care.
