This very rare and handsome LP from London (LL1253, LP pressed in the UK, jacket printed in the USA, red/silver label, mono) features Mischa Elman’s masterly accounts of the Grieg Violin Sonatas No. 1 in F Major Op. 8 and No. 3 in C minor Op. 45, accompanied throughout by the fine Israeli pianist Joseph Seiger.
Both works were warmly recorded at Decca’s West Hampstead Studios, London, on 18 and 19 April 1955.
The Russians – from Rachmaninoff to Richter – have always displayed a special devotion and feeling for the music of Edward Grieg, advancing the music’s cause long before many other international artists followed suit. These beautifully turned accounts of Grieg’s unjustly underrated Violin Sonatas have never been surpassed.
There are informative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Alan Frank, provided in English only. The striking cover design is uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Though there is minor wear along the open edge and the faint imprint of a former price sticker on the rear panel, the jacket remains beautiful. There are no owners’ markings, bends, seamsplits, or other defects, and the album is still solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
