Description

Elton John / Tower of Power – DBX Encoded White Label Test Pressing | Atlantic Records SD-16614 / SD-16601 | 2-Fer Series | ~1980–1982

Up for sale is a rare white label test pressing from Atlantic Records’ DBX-encoded 2-Fer series. The label is handwritten in red marker reading “Elton John / dbx”, with original kraft sleeve bearing a handwritten production note referencing both sides’ content.

Side A — SD-16614-AB-DBX / “2 FER”

Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (2-Fer Reissue)

Side B — SD-16601-A-RE-1

Tower of Power (Re-cut lacquer, RE-1)

What is a DBX disc?

DBX encoding was a short-lived audiophile noise-reduction format used on vinyl LPs from approximately 1979–1982. Over 1,100 titles were released in this format before it was discontinued. DBX discs require a DBX decoder to play back correctly — without one, audio will sound heavily compressed. This adds to their rarity and collector interest today.

What is a test pressing?

Test pressings are pre-production copies made before a commercial run is approved. They are produced in extremely limited quantities (often fewer than 10 copies), making them significantly rarer than standard commercial releases.

Condition:

• Vinyl: See photos — surface marks present, plays as expected for a vintage test pressing

• Label: White with handwritten red marker notation

• Sleeve: Plain paper/brown kraft envelope (included)

This is a one-of-a-kind piece for DBX collectors, Elton John collectors, or Atlantic Records history enthusiasts.
