Description
- Excellent copy of the very scarce original 1977 Elvis Presley US pressing black vinyl LP "Moody Blue" (RCA AFL1-2428).
- This is not the more common 1979 release (RCA AQL1-2428) or the equally common Canadian copy, but the rare 1977 copy that had a very limited release in black vinyl.
- Serious Elvis collectors know the story about how this became such a rarity but I will discuss the circumstances so all Elvis fans will know the difference between this and the very common blue vinyl version.
- The LP was originally released in the US on blue vinyl and sold many copies. RCA then decided to change the color of the vinyl to the standard black and had pressed and released just a small amount when Elvis died. RCA decided it was inappropriate to release the black vinyl copy and they went back to the original blue vinyl. As a result, there are millions of blue vinyl copies while just a few of the original US AFL1-2428 black vinyl copies made it into the hands of collectors (some estimates are as low as 25,000).
- RCA a couple of years later released another black vinyl version but it had a different label and catalog number (AQL1-2428) and is fairly common. You should also be careful not to confuse this rare US black vinyl LP with certain other foreign releases (especially Canadian) that were only released on black vinyl and are also fairly common.
- The glossy LP plays crisp and clear. There are a couple of small factory defects that are lightly audible, otherwise the vinyl just has a few light sleeve scuffs and superficial marks. The labels are near mint. The cover is near mint with a small saw cut. Included is the original inner sleeve with ads for other Elvis recordings.
