Here we have lovely Czech Soprano Emmy Destinn, one of the greatest ever Carmens, with two selections from that opera. They are the Habanera and the Seguidilla on a beautifully clean and tidy 10¾” Odeon 50230/1 recorded in Berlin in January 1907.
This exact recording came out also on Fonotipia and, in the US of A, on Okeh records.. (a label we always associate with Mamie Smith and Her Blues Hounds and Clarence Williams’ Blue Five).
Emmy’s musical director on this recording is the splendidly named Friedrich Kark.
The record is as clean as a freshly peeled Pak Choi, and it shines like a Mercedes in the Chelsea showroom. It really is a very collectable copy, and it plays beautifully. It’s not Emmy’s rarest Odeon, but it’s rare to find one in such lovely condition.
Using the VJM grading system (which we find to be vague and imprecise.. but heigh ho, everybody uses it) we reckon that this record is more-or-less an E.
